Adderall at Bowdoin

[Students’ little helper](http://orient.bowdoin.edu/orient/article.php?date=2009-12-11&section=1&id=4)

that’s unfortunate but I’m sure there are plenty of other school that have this problem. considering how Bowdoin is deemed to have an uncompetitive student body, I bet adderall use is more widespread at schools with intense, competitive students like MIT or UChicago.

Could well be, but according to this article, the use at Bowdoin is way above the national average:

[Adderall use](http://orient.bowdoin.edu/orient/article.php?date=2009-12-11&section=2&id=1)

when I slept over at bowdoin for about 4 days I came to the conclusion that Bowdoin is an extremely social school and so people spend a lot of time partying, playing video games, and hanging out wiht friends so maybe most of them get that in the way of their school work. People in this school get along too much… and that is not going to be a problem haha

The adderall survey was only completed by 500 or so students and of those only 88 responded to “some use” - that may be 17% of the “survey” BUT it is less than 5% of the entire student body (a number showing usage well below the national average)-----someone on the Editorial Board at Bowdoin Orient was not paying attention to the numbers and chose to create the uproar of high usage! Hope they clear this up!

The National average only accounts for students that cop to the use of adderall. I have heard of many students at UVA using the drug to get through finals.

Ya…readcarefully is exactly right. that article is very misleading.
88/1700 students really isnt that bad of a percentage. And the article also says that 37% have a prescription for the drug. So out of the 88 who have taken it 40 people have prescription. So this uproar is kinda a dumb article.

Only around 45 students admitted to taking adderall without having a medical purpose for it.

Hey zfox - as a student there, can you get the editorial board on the Orient to clear this up in their next issue

hey ya. i haven’t read everything that people have written on this thread so i don’t know if anyone has said this yet, i’m on the bowdoin orient and the way we do those survey’s is totally illegitimate. we send out an email to the student body with a link to this survey and then people can respond as many times as they want or not respond if they don’t want to and we spit the numbers out like they mean anything. it’s so dumb.

Your response is a bit confusing. If you simply ask your editorial board to prepare a proper errata to indicate they were not reading the data correctly and therefore misinformed the community that would be appropriate. whether the survey is legitimate is not the issue - the issue is that the reporting in your paper is wrong.

These quotes are from college *******:

Once upon a time, Bowdoin had a slight reputation for chemical research in drugs, but today, our campus is more known just for having a fair share of alcoholic beverages and marijuana. Although some hardcore drugs may be used on campus, it’s definitely kept private and hidden from mainstream of campus life. The pressure to participate is relatively tame. Students at Bowdoin respect the wishes of other students and will not put them in situations they are not comfortable in.

A lot of students, during training and athletic seasons, do not smoke pot and keep to alcohol, but most students experiment with pot while in college, and some might say that beer is consumed just as much as water during a night of partying. The drinking and smoking scene is pretty balanced in participation between guys and girls. The thing to remember is that participation is up to you. Students at Bowdoin are such individuals that they would not think of making you become involved if that is not your thing. Your peers will just hope you are having a good time doing whatever you plan on doing.

Best wishes and do your homework!

adderall is nothing to get concerned about… i only know one person who used it for one night so they could finish writing a paper for finals. and in terms of other drug use, a number of people smoke pot, but from every other student i know at other colleges, i think this is a general norm across all colleges at this time… and there’s definitely no pressure to smoke or drink at all.
