Hi, I have a few questions regarding supplemental voice lessons. Do many MT students pay for the additional 1/2 hr. weekly vocal lessons? and what year student (fresh, soph, etc)? It is very expensive, so if you could only afford one semester per year, would you recommend first or second semester? Thanks.

Everyone pays for both semesters. I think they run $1,500 per semester. If you can only afford one then go with what you can afford. I really don’t think it matters with semester you choose.

My S asked for the additional 1/2 hour to be added for the 2nd semester of his freshman year and we have continued since that time. He finds it beneficial, but it is all in what you can afford.

Thanks BeenthereMTdad and TAHDad!

Incase you’re still looking for some feedback on this topic- I definitely suggest (as do most faculty members) the additional half hour of vocal lessons if you can manage it! That allows your lessons to be split up into 30 min sessions 2x’s a week. Most teachers use one lesson for repertoire with your accompanist and one for technique. Or you can opt to have a straight 1-hour lesson. Without the additional 30 minutes you figure you’re really only getting about 20-25 minutes a week with your voice teacher because lessons are scheduled back to back and you have to account for transition time and greetings of course!
