Admission Chances?

I'm an applicant from India, and have applied to Harvard(EA-Deferred), Columbia, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton, Brown and UPenn, amongst the Universities.
I've also applied to the following LAC's: Williams, Bates, Colgate, Grinnell, Swarthmore, Reed and Carleton.

I want to major in Physics, and my scores and extra-curriculars are as follows:

SAT 1: 2150, CR=710(national percentile=96),Math=710(national percentile=94), Writing=730(national percentile=97);
Math Level 2:800(national percentile=88);
Physics and Chemistry: 770(national percentile=82 and 83 respectively);

My school transcripts placed me at the top 1% of my class for my 9th and 10th years. However, ranks have slid down badly over the past year.

My Co-Curriculars include:
30 odd wins at city, regional and national level at quizzing events, for one of these quizzes I received an award from the ex-President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Several leadership posts at school.
Have won a few national level essay/creative writing competitions, and a handful of national/city level debates and/or Model United Nations conferences.
Over the past 2 months I have received decent ranks in 3 Olympiads, which are held in India, and 7 other countries in Asia(though I think South African students do take part too).
(I came State Rank- 3rd, International Rank-81st in the Science Olympiad,
I came State Rank- 12th, International Rank-323rd in the Math Olympiad,
I came State Rank- 24th, International Rank-420th in the Cyber Olympiad)

I have helped at a home for the elderly, and have helped to educate underprivileged children from city slums.
Played for my school soccer team.
Have certification in Piano and Music Theory till Grade 5 from the Royal School of Music London.
....etc.

I think my essay/essay type answers/short answers were quite strong and do me justice.

I was deferred by Harvard, but that notwithstanding, Columbia is one of my absolute favourite schools. So could anyone please chance me? Keeping in mind I need full/near full financial aid.

225 views and no replies? Anybody? Please? :/

superbump. . .

Oh for the sake of ten char bumps! Anybody out there?

you definitely have a chance but your sats are low. Good luck!

hmmmm. Lets keep the hope then and wait till the blue letters drop in. :)

It does seem your SAT is about 50-100 points a little low. But plenty of kids that even make that par are rejected. But I believe you have a STRONG chance just from you as a person! Academics are everything. They want to see, that although you may be smart, you would actually take advantage of the opportunities at Columbia! Good luck :)

Hmmmm, thank you. Though i doubt that columbia as an institution is my best fit, its nonetheless a place i.ve always wanted to study at after reading brian greene’s books. Haha. Well, now its all about waiting. What do my stats look like in general? Case to chance me for any of the other schools on my list?
Also, very importantly, how much aid can columbia provide? Will asking for aid turn off the admissions office?

Well I don’t know too much about some of the schools you have applied too! (Other than the name). But if I were you, I’d feel safe with Reed, but I could see Bates, Swarthmore, and Williams being somewhat a reach. (But honestly, they aren’t a reach for ANYONE). Btw, no Middlebury? Looking at your list it seems to match quite well. I had a friend on the Bates admissions board whom I talked to over the summer. A quick rundown if it helps is:

  1. They look at your geography
    2)Then you GPA and SAT/ACT scores in comparison and they usually put everyone in pools.
  2. Essays.

Fairly general. But I am saying that because I don’t want you to worry to much about my earlier comment on the SAT because all though it is somewhat important, it won’t kill you :slight_smile: Plus you do have a good SAT score anyways.

Regarding financial Aid, it seems to be quite debated. Often, the schools you applied to especially, it is “need-blind”. However, whether that is true or not I do not know because sometimes I see it not being the case, but I see many cases where money talks. So I cannot help you there! I hope that helps a little bit :)

I totally missed your first list -_- but regarding the Ivies, I can’t really chance you surely on any! Because it is the ivies. But I strongly believe you WILL get into one of them if not more which is an accomplishment in itself. :slight_smile: Don’t worry! Go enjoy the last moments of high school while you can friend.

Thank you very much for the encouragement. Lets hope it works out well. :slight_smile: I really like grinnell though, any idea about the place? My chances at it?

Haha Sorry I do not!! I’m actually a senior in high school so all my knowledge is based off my personal research+my sister went to any Ivy league so she knows alot about the whole big “pretentious” school thing :slight_smile: Let’s hope we both make our schools!!! :)

Haha. Well thanks for all the encouragement. Lets hope it works out. And well, all hail to to your sister!
Best of luck to you.
