Admission In Canada

Currently in my high school, I am allowed to drop a class. French III is on my radar, but my peers claim that I need three years of French to apply to Canadian universities like Waterloo or British Columbia. Hence my question is that is this claim true as I already have 2 years of French, do I need one more? O.o

call the schools

Yeah that’s what I will have to do but I just wanted an answer: yes or no.

Yes. Most large Canadian universities require three years of a single foreign language to be considered for admission.

Dang! :frowning:

Canadian universities do NOT require 3 years of a foreign language. I’ve never seen a single year required.

UBC doesn’t: http://you.ubc.ca/admissions/international-curricula/american-curricula/</a></p>

Neither does Waterloo:

@bouders I assumed that the OP was from Canada because her peers seemed knowledgeable in getting into Canadian universities, which doesn’t seem like something that Americans would know. Perhaps the OP could clarify?

But yes, if you are from Canada and applying to a Canadian university, then you do need 3 years of a language (at least where I live.) This is the requirement for BC students applying to UBC: http://you.ubc.ca/admissions/canadian-highschools/bc-yukon/</a>

All of them require a language 11, so unless you’ve taken a challenge exam to exempt you from a language 9 or 10, then you do need 3 years of languages. But maybe it is different depending on whichever province you are from, so check with the university is probably your best bet. (Though learning a language is never a bad thing, regardless of whether or not you need it)
