Admission in Ivy league with low ERW SAT Score

What are my chances of getting into an Ivy with a 1330 in the new SAT? (800 in Math Section) (800 in Math-II, 780 in Chemistry and 770 in Physics)?

I am opting for computer science and financial aid as an international student.

I have 7 years of student government, High GPA and awards in academics. I am also an inter-school track athlete, soccer player, and a cricketer. Highest ranked C++ programmer in the country in Hacker-rank and won multiple coding competitions. I represented my country internationally in quizzing, interned in a multi billion dollar company as data analyst/app developer. Also, developed an app that got an investment offer to start my own company. Two times Winner of International Mathematics Olympiad, Regional round.

With a 530 in EBRW? I’d say zero. These colleges are all super competitive and the successful international students will have very competitive scores.

A 530 EBRW is going to be an issue at the selective/highly selective schools. It would be well below the 25%ile at all the Ivies, for example.

You have time to increase that score. Have you taken the Toefl test?

Why the Ivy League? Is there something special about that sports conference?

Why wouldn’t you start your own company if you got an offer?

.

Ivy league because they provide need based financial aid to international students unlike most universities.

I didn’t start because I would be leaving my country next year for university, so starting my own company when I am going to leave, felt pointless. (I got the offer when i was in grade 12)

No I haven’t.

There are other places that provide need based aid- they just don’t guarantee to meet need. They also are unlikely to be names that are well known in your home country, so they may not be as useful when you go back. But they do exist.

You are asking a US college/university to effectively pay for some or all of your education. Why would they do that? Because they think that they will get something from the exchange. Figuring out what you have that they would value enough to pay for your education is your challenge. A gold or silver at the international level of the IMO, for example would get you attention at the top schools (such as MIT). Being a recruitable athlete would get you attention at schools where that sport is important. High SAT scores will get you attention at places such as UAlabama, which has a clear chart as to how much financial aid they give for specific scores (they want high scoring students who will bring up the average score and to build a stronger core of academically competitive students). These are just examples based on your post, not a full list of possibilities

Unfortunately, though just being what is sometimes called “average excellent” is not enough to get you into schools who reject 95% of their applicants. You need to have all of what you have and something that makes you stand out. It is really hard for US students to do; it is even harder for international students.

Where do people get their information?

  1. There are only a handful of schools that guarantee to meet need for internationals and they are not all Ivies.
  2. Not all Ivies guarantee to meet need for internationals.
  3. There are schools that do sometimes give very generous need-based fin aid to some internationals but many of them are not Ivies.

Google’s your friend. Research what these schools are.

I applied to all the universities that provide need based financial aid to international students, and most of them are ivy, that’s why i asked to know my chances. There are few universities like Colgate, Williams, Bowdoin which aren’t ivy but provide need based financial aid to international students, so I have applied there as well.

Few colleges are test optional for international students, but it might be worth researching some of those. Financial aid is going to be hit-or-miss. A 1330 is a low score for American students going into CS, and international odds are often less than half that of the domestic pool.

So you are a senior?

Did you apply test optional to the TO schools, like Bowdoin? With regard to TOEFL…don’t most of the schools you applied to require it, or IELTS? (unless your HS instruction is in English)

All of your US schools are reaches…have you applied to schools in your own country? Other countries?

Yes I applied, but since my HS is English medium, I didn’t need to give IELTS or TOEFL.
Yes I have applied few universities back in my country.

Thank you but can you name few universities that are not ivy and give need based financial aid to international students that I can apply to?

They may not give need-based financial aid but they may give score-based financial aid (ie., if you score that 800 again and anywhere from 600 to 700 on the English section you’d be considered or automatically get a scholarship).
Look at the USNWR ranking of national LACS: most top 30 LACs offer excellent financial aid for internationals but are need aware so that the more money you need the less likely you are of getting in.

People are reluctant to do that since a) it can change from year to year and no one wants to mislead you and b) we don’t know your budget/how much you will need.

There many schools that will give some financial aid to international students, but the student would still have to come up with tens of thousands of dollars each year.

In addition to Liberal Arts Colleges research suggested above, I would recommend you also research financial aid in states that are less popular with international students, states such as Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota or New Mexico. All have the reputation of being generous with aid for high-achieving international students.

. So did you leave?
Your issue is that you have an SAT of 1330 while your countrymen are getting scores above 1500. You have to be one of the best students, in your country, to get noticed by the adcoms of the top schools. They have tens of thousands of domestic and international students vying for a few seats, at the schools that fund students.
The adcoms will wonder if that score was the result of too much time on your EC’s.

You have no chance. Sorry to bear bad news, but an Ivy isn’t in the cards with that score.

Also, from the sounds of it, you aren’t absolutely for sure leaving your country next year.

So why not pursue that startup opportunity?

I am an indian staying in middle east, If i get into US, I will move to US. If not, I will move back to India for higher education. So no matter what, I will be leaving the country.

I attempted the SAT only once in grade 12 with almost no preparation because USA was not in my budget, so SAT was not needed. Anyways learning more about financial aid, I attempted once and tried to score as much as i could because I felt it was worth a shot.
