Admission Process for class of '12

I know I'm early.
I was wondering when the proper time for beginning the admissions process at USNA was. I believe it all begins this spring, but are there any particular dates that are important towards the application process? When is the best time to contact your BG officer, and how do you know which to contact in your area?

The swim coach at Navy (recruited athlete) has told me that the Admissions at Navy are impressed with early, complete admissions, so that is my goal.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Realistically, the process begins in May/June when you become an "official candidate" and begin submitting paperwork for both USNA and your Congressional (MOC) nominations. However, you can do some things now. First, be sure to read everything you can about USNA. If you haven't visited and can do so, do so. Get a copy of the catalog (I believe it's downloadable from the usna.edu website). Second, see if you can obtain the current year MOC nomination applications to see what you'll need to do for next year (some are available on-line at your MOC's website and others can be requested from the office; note that if your MOC was just elected, his/her materials are probably not yet available and you shouldn't assume they will be the same as those of the predecessor).

In terms of contacting your BGO, as has been posted before, there is no need to contact him/her right now unless you have particular questions. You won't show up in the BGO's system as an official candidate until June 1. Once you become an official candidate, you will be told who your BGO is and given contact info. If you need to contact your BGO prior to June 1, the USNA catalog lists contact info for the BGO area coordinators, who cover large geographic areas. Contact your area coordinator to obtain the name and contact infor for your BGO.

The important dates are (1) Jan 31st when your USNA application is due. Most (but not all) successful candidates have their packets completed by early December. Other important dates are deadlines for your MOC applications; these vary by individual MOC. Especially in competitive and populous geographic regions, they can be quite early. For example, one of our Senators required everything to be in by around Sept. 20th. You do not want to miss those deadlines but, again, they are unique to your state and district.

Watching my offspring in all of this ... I'd say ...

Feb.1, 12:01 a.m. That's when you can first submit your pre-application via your NASS (Summer Seminar) application.

Alert your senators & congressperson in early March of your desire, and they should by then have their application for an application on line.

Go get 'em Class of 2012. You're not early at all. And good luck!

know the process like the back of your hand so you dont get surprised. also, practice the cfa as much as you can. If you go to NASS you will do it there. Thats only 6 months left to prepare. I would contact your BGO as soon as you are assigned a candidate number, and given his phone number just to intoduce yourself.

Junior year is not too early to get the application process started for any of the service academies.

For the class of 2012:

-purchase Smallwoods book, "Candidate's guide to the USNA"...available on Amazon.com...consider it a "must read"....and let it, and your BGO, be your guide through this process.

submit peliminary application (application to summer seminar) on-line at the USNA admissions site, starting on Feb 1st of this year.

-prep for the SAT exams; take SATs in May or June (if you have not taken them in either Jan or March); also consider SATII's for any other course work you have completed (while you will not need SAT II's for academy applications, you may need them for any other schools you will be applying to)

-contact BGO around May of your Junior year- AFTER you have visited the USNA at least once and after you have read through at least the catalogue. Consider a written letter of introduction first, followed by a followup phone call.

-contact MOC offices by April-May of junior year to let them know of your interest and to get you on their mailing list and radar.

-towards end of junior year, approach teacher references (11th grade english and math teacher) and let them know you will be requesting a reference from them. (Teachers are getting more and more requests for references for early decision, and in our school some teachers imposed a june deadline for reference requests that they complied in Sept)....check out how this works in your school, but giving your teachers a heads-up is a good idea.

-if you play a sport and plan on continuing with it at USNA, make contact with the coach before your JUNIOR year season. In addition, consider participating in a summer sport camp at USNA in that sport. If you are participitating in any other sport camp, do let the Navy coaches know where/when so they can see you if there is an interest there. (NB: most recruiting takes place during Junior year... with most coaches making their selection list by the time Junior year is over.....depending on the coach, they may have some kids of "high interest" on their radar even earlier than that....10th grade! While the coach is restricted in contacting you based on NCAA rules, you are free to contact them....so take advantage of that and let them know of your interest, providing it is genuine- don't waste their time, or yours, if this particular school is not high on your list of possibilities)

-visit the USNA again in the summer if you can- late july is good as the plebes are going through their paces and you can get a glimpse of what goes on if you walk around the yard with eyes/ears open

Summer before senior year: (once candidate number is issued):

-gather up all paperwork, including application, MOC paperwork, etc, and complete what you can
-contact DoDMERB and schedule your appointments BEFORE senior year starts
-prepare and complete essay/personal statement
-prepare and complete athletic and/or activity CV
-complete all college visits
assemble folders for each MOC and reference request (include cover letter, copy of personal statement/essay, athletic and activitiy CV's)
-continue to prep for SATs / ACT
-work on physical fitness, including running, push ups, pull ups, upper body strength conditioning and swimming
-purchase a good pair of running shoes and use them- reguarly.
-practice interviewing skills

September of Senior year:

-distribute folders to teacher references
-complete application packets for MOCs
-make sure to register for Oct and Nov SATs / ACT
-complete application packet for USNA and submit (*based on good SAT scores.....if they are still not so good, hold off submitting packet until Nov scores are in)
-complete applications for all other schools (plan B, C, D and E)....make sure you have plans B,C,D and E.
-study and do well in classes
-follow-up with MOC offices if called in to interview
-follow-up with DoDMERB with any outstanding issues
-follow-up with BGO for interview
-register for Dec SATs if scores are still low or if you think you can improve on them

-last, do post questions on CC....there are lots of folks on this site that can offer assistance or clarify things should you need it....

best of luck!
