Hmm, not to be a doom-and-gloomer but this seems like a rather poor article by the Daily Trojan's standards. For one, the numbers seems to be off.

When considering that there was certainly an increase in applications from last year and the fact that USC admitted 170 fewer freshman according to the article, one would think the admissions rate went down from last year, when the admissions rate was 24.7%. But then the article states that the admit rate was 25%.

Second, some quotes are redunant and not very enlightening. From the middle of the article:
"We want to be more competitive. We want to be level with the UC schools," Mirabian said.

Corey Roeder, a sophomore majoring in international relations and East Asian languages and cultures, agreed.

"I think we want to get a better reputation as an academic institution," he said. "This will make us more competitive with the UC schools."
Ok, wonderful. We got two people saying the exact same thing. And it's nothing new that we are competitive with the UC schools. I think we can aim higher?

I kind of agree with you. Not a great article. My son has never been impressed with the Daily Trojan.

Yes, it's very poorly written, and the numbers don't seem to make sense. If USC recieved 37,000 freshman applications (3k more than last year), and admitted 170 fewer freshman, then the acceptance rate should drop to just under 23%.

I hope USC puts out a press release soon with actual numbers.
