Admissions chances post national scholarship win

Hi all.

I’ve recently been blessed to have won the Horatio Alger scholarship at the national level, awarded to 106 students from a pool of around 40,000 for overcoming adversity in the pursuit of higher education.

Before I was selected for this scholarship I was deferred from a school that I am absolutely dead set on. It isn’t an ivy league type school where deferral is generally expected for competitive applicants. I was just wondering how if at all I would expect my admissions chances to change after having notified the college of my award.

Congratulations.

The real question is does winning it convey any additional information that wasn’t already in your application.

I expect winning a very prestigious award like that will certainly make them consider your app more favorably. Will it tip you into the accepted pile? Maybe.

It’s best not to be dead set on a college though. Hopefully you applied to a range of colleges that you are likely to be accepted to and can afford.
