My parents said that schools have Admissions Counselors who can evaluate your chances there, based on criteria that you give them. This all before you apply. Is there such a thing?

You mean a college counselor at a high school?

yes there are many private admissions consultants who do such a thing. in fact, the people who created this website do that, but there's many others out there too. chances are, you're going to get a somewhat accurate feeling for where you stand if you post on the "what are my chances" forum, but if your parents insist, then go for one.

Geez, I screwed up the meaning of my initial post.

I meant at universities you are applying to, they have university provided admissions counselors that give you an estimate.

They "estimate" your chances AFTER you've applied. It would be inappropriate and unprofessional of them to say anything before based on what criteria? How can they make a learned and fair decision without having all the evidence and facts in front of them before doing so. Also, it is usually not just one person making a call, but the decision (accept, deny, defer or WL) is the result of a good deal of input from at least one or two others.
