Admissions...essays???

I'll second that glitters.

BTW for essays for exeter should they be humorous or very serious?

The reason why it came up is that in the college boards a guy got into yale writing clam farting as one of his EC's :

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/470497-clam-fart-oh-my-god-what-did-i-do-5.html

Well I mean it matters what you want..but Im sure they want you to be honest. Don't say something very important to you is clam fart, it would be humorous but probably end up in rejection lol.

I chose Whats you favorite song as one of them. Its pretty serious...but I had to spice it up a little at the end cuz I was bored myself. So a little humor never hurts in my opinion, these people must get board of reading.

Oh that's true so I guess original but not completely stupid

Yup. Thats my opinion on the matter.

Hmm is anyone doing the advertisement option instead of an essay for Andover?

O ya I saw that...didn't do it though.

No, I'm choosing the first one, specifically because I think that the people who choose that essay will be a minority on comparison with writers of the other essays. If I can get that essay to shine next to the other essays from the same prompt, or at least make it a little better, than I should hopefully stand out a little! It would be easier to be better than the comparatively few who chose my essay than to be better then the millions who will inevitably choose the one about the autobiography.

So, in conclusion, go your own way - don't follow the pack ;-)

I actually thought that most people would do the first one (I almost did, i actually started on mine) since it was a lot less specific than the others

Ehh, I might be wrong. Whatever, I'll just make sure that mine is one of the best ;-)

I turned in my andover one years ago, can u guys tell me what the options were so I know what your talking about.

I ddi the one about improving energy usage and stuff.

That's the attitude TomTheCat you seem opinionated therefore, probably able to create a memorable essay. To mpicz the topics were:

1) Discuss a matter you once though you knew "for sure" but of which you are no longer certain
2) Imagine you win a grant to invent and design a "must have" gadget/tool for a boarding school-bound student. What would your invention be and why would it be a "must have" item?
3) Imagine the year is 2060 and you are sitting down to write an autobiography. What would it be called and why? For what would you most like to be remembered?
4) Imagine you are a member of Phillips Academy's student group sponsoring the Green Cup Challenge, a competition among boarding school to promote conservation in campus-wide energy use. What initiatives would you propose to reduce energy use on campus and how would you engage your fellow students in this competition?
5) If you were given one day and a budget of 1000 to make a difference in your community, what would you do? Whom would you involve? What would you hope to achieve?
6) Imagine you are asked to do a one-year research project in either your history/social science or science class. What kind of research project would you design or what would you hope to learn?

I def. did 4. I have to say that my Andover essay wasn't super amazing. I think I turned it in to early. I procrastinated the other ones and ended up thinking of great things to write about.

Wow! Andover's essay questions are really interesting... thought provoking, and they give applicants a chance to really let their personalities shine through!

MPicz, the same thing happened to me, haha. I procrastinated on all of my essays, letting ideas percolate... however, now that they are finished (as of a few days ago!) I feel like they really show who I am as a person. I tried to take them all interpretively, and I don't think they are like anything I've written before, lol.

Is anybody really proud of something they've produced/discovered during this whole process?

Im proud of my essays...If im not proud of them then I throw them out and start over. I just feel like if I thought more I could have done something great with andover...o well. My graded essay was this really creative summer project so hopefully they'll take a good look at that.

NEVERMIND. Just re-read my andover essay from a long time ago and I actually kind of like it. Different approach from the other 3 (because I wrote them in a truncated time period), but I like it lol.

which one did you choose, mpicz?

4) Imagine you are a member of Phillips Academy's student group sponsoring the Green Cup Challenge, a competition among boarding school to promote conservation in campus-wide energy use. What initiatives would you propose to reduce energy use on campus and how would you engage your fellow students in this competition?

i chose 1 :)

wow andover gives you 4 (or more) essay topic options?
