Well, obviously, you should explain it to them about what happened. They ask you to do that right in the letter! It's possible that they'll put you on academic probation to start freshman year, so you really should think seriously about how you're going to have to really work hard once you arrive at NYU.

I encourage many of you to read posts a little more in the future, if only to know who you're responding to.

An update, we received a reply from NYU in this matter; my son is being placed on academic probation with a mandated GPA of 2.5+ during his freshman year. He is also being removed from the Stern Scholars program and will have to reapply during the school year. While it is a slight setback, I personally don't forsee any issues in the future regarding this.

We ended up not taking into account much of what written here and chose to explain the circumstances during senior year and provide accompanying letters from people familiar with the situation. That would be my only word of advice to those who will undergo this process in the future; make sure to support your explanation with letters from unbiased parties familiar with the situation.

Good luck to those who may be encountering similar letters in the future.

Incognito, I'm not sure if your comment about reading posts more carefully was directed to me or not, but if it was, my post just prior to your last one was in response to frannyzooey, not your original post.

No, it wasn't referring to your post. Some of the posters prior though missed the fact that this is my son undergoing the situation, rather than myself.

5 years later, I have just received the same letter. Pending an explanation of why my grades dropped, my acceptance can either be rescinded or reinstated. While my letter does not match frannyzooey’s it does match incognito’s. This post and one other are the only two that I have found and neither one was rescinded, so that is a bit reassuring.

My grades throughout high school were pretty consistent. As and Bs from freshman year to first semester Junior year. I deviated slightly with one C+ second semester junior year. Then, first semester senior year was a nightmare. I had 2 As, 2 Bs, 1 C, 1 D, 1 F. The F was an elective that I ended up dropping second semester. I was honestly blessed to be accepted to NYU and found it as a spark of inspiration and a sign from God to get my a** in gear. I finished off second semester with BETTER grades: 1 A, 2 Bs, 2 Cs - Absolutely no Ds or Fs.

I wouldn’t believe forums on here that say you’re in the clear if you don’t get Ds or Fs second semester. Every case is different. I honestly thought I was in the clear because I had gotten rid of those Ds, but here I am with this letter that is ready to ruin me.

The letter is honestly encouraging. It comes off as a slap on the wrist and an opportunity to reflect on your shortcomings and move on, however, I’m trying not to take it lightly as this is obviously very serious and they are trying to give me a second chance.

On the other hand, I don’t have any excuse to give them. My parents didn’t get divorced, and my grandmother didn’t die. I am wondering if this second chance is solely for those with legitimate excuses, or if it is in fact a slap on the wrist.

Clearly, this has rattled me. Help.

@franny- hmmm that’s an interesting letter. It seems they won’t rescind your application as they state in the first quote and last. But I suggest that if you have an “appropriate” explanation to why you slacked then you should respond. If not, I don’t think they will rescind it. Maybe NYU is just trying to scare their new students into performing well this upcoming fall…

dude, it’s been five years LOL franny probably have already graduated.

Kalavarez, just a question, how did you go from As/Bs to that low grades in Senior year? I am really surprised NYU hasn’t rescinded your application as your GPA probably dropped by more than 1 point.

What’s also interesting is that you had 7 classes first semester with a 2.4 and then 5 classes 2nd semester with a 2.8, it looks like you just dropped the classes which you had trouble with (just an observation).

Basing off that, if I was an NYU admissions officer I’d probably want a pretty dam good reason. I’d say just find something that is pretty traumatizing or emotional to you, because saying you just slacked off is most likely going to get your application rescinded.

I don’t understand why NYU accepted you if the dropoff occurred in your first semester. They should have seen these grades before accepting you. Or, were you ED? It seems odd that the letter is only coming now anyway.

Thought I would bump this up to see if anyone has gotten a similar letter this year. I just received the same letter that frannyzooey received six years ago.

How were your overall grades for each class?

You guys need to stop being lazy.
