Admissions Statistics - 2009

fun is fun - no encouraging! ;)

No, Milton’s acceptance rate is somewhere between 25 and 30 percent. Again, just because they have a certain number of spots, that doesn’t mean that they admit exactly that many. Schools like Milton assume around a 60% yield. Plus, its rate will always be a little skewed since it is so much harder to get in there as a day student.

SPS was about 20%. 250 accepted out of over 1200 applicant

A lady at the admissions office at Milton told me that they had around a 20% acceptance rate. She said that while the boarder rate was higher it was around the mid 20s.

people are confused about acceptance rate and yield. Even Choate and Deerfiled accept almost two times the number of spots. Especially, thesedays many students apply to more than 10 schools and they are admitted to more than 2-3 schools.
NMH accepatnce rate has been more than 50% in the past until last year. For the correct
acceptance rate, we have to wait until the official data are published. As soon as I know
of those, I will post them.

Yea SPS put theirs in the acceptance letter…wanted to make us feel special lol.

Andover put theirs online more or less immediately - 16.6% acceptance rate.

@erkybk: Don’t know 'bout Choate, but Deerfield DOES NOT accept twice the number they have spot for, they had over 2000 applicants this year and accepted around 200.(Since they have a student body of 600 total, we can say they hae 150 spots for new students)
Even the estimated acceptance rate was 12% for Deerfield, and they’re currently over enrolled so their yield should be way higher than 75%.

Oh. That makes more sense then for Milton. Darn.
Where else is it harder as a day student?

Deerfield acceptance rate has bee about 17% and Milton acceptance rate has been about 30% for last three years. This year’s data has not been released yet. Let’s wait
and see.

“Don’t know 'bout Choate, but Deerfield DOES NOT accept twice the number they have spot for, they had over 2000 applicants this year and accepted around 200.(Since they have a student body of 600 total, we can say they hae 150 spots for new students)”

Actually this math is wrong. It assumes the average prep student will attend for 4 years. Due to planned class growth and replacements for attrition students are admitted at each year in the secondary school sequence. At most top schools a significant percentage are admitted as 10th graders (3 year students), with a smaller percentage of 2 year and 1 year students. Because it is a weighted average the last two can bring the average down more than one might think.

So, a school of 600 probably needs to enroll at least 200 new students each year and accept 250-300 before the wait list.

Actually I underestimated as well. The Deerfield site indicates that they admitted 333 and enrolled 227 new students last year. Unless those figures are outliers I’m not sure how Deerfield’s admissions rate could have dropped to the 12% I’ve seen thrown about.

Where can we find this on the Deerfield site? I’m looking and having trouble finding it.

Someone posted that the school had received 2049 applications this year. Assuming they also admitted 333 this year, the acceptance rate would be 333/2049=16.25%.

Tom: prospective student Info/Fast facts about Deerfield

The numbers released a few days ago from Deerfield: 2,076 completed applications and 325 admitted students. 220 of 325 accepted offers. Those numbers may change slightly with late applications etc.

I believe Deerfield’s acceptance rate will end up in the 14.6%-15.5% range. I don’t believe they accepted as many as last year.

Based on hola3’s numbers, stats for Deerfield this year:
Acceptance rate: 15.6%
Yield rate: 67.7%

from an earlier post –

“I think NMH had 1100 applicants and accepted approximately 150-200”

“I highly doubt that. NMH does not have a 13-18% acceptance rate, or anywhere close to that.”

Again – a confusion with yield. It would not surprise me at all to learn that NMH had 1100 applicants. NMH is a safety for match for many, many students – so their yield tends to be much lower than exeter and andover. It also seems they don’t play the “managing yield” game – so they tend to admit all students who they think will contribute to the community, even if they feel that they are a safety for that student.

As far as the acceptance number of 150 -200, that doesn’t seem quite right to me. I believe they are working on having approximately 100-125 in the freshman class, and maybe 200 in the sophomore class. They continue to add students in Junior, Senior and PG years. The 150 - 200 number may apply only to the freshman class, perhaps?

NMH acceptance rate was 52% in 2007 and 47% in 2008. It’s been around 50%. for last three years.
I heard that they still accept application. I am not sure what that means. maybe they have not filled the slots yet.

I probably wasn’t clear – I am not disputing an acceptance rate of around 50% (I have not idea what it is this year). I was just saying that I would believe that they got 1100 applicants – but I don’t believe the only admitted 150-200. I think that they are adding close to 200 new students next year (new freshman class plus additions to other classes) – so that would be more than 200 students they want to add, and they certainly don’t have a 100% yield!
