Phillips Academy 2016

Hello everyone. I’m an ninth grader who has applied to Andover for ninth grade. I wanted to see my chances of getting in, even though I have been told many times that “grades and scores aren’t everything. They consider other things.” But for anyone who can make an estimate about my chances of going to Andover.

Average grades in school: 92-98 (A-A+)

SSAT percentiles: Verbal - 52. Reading - 78. Math - 86

Classes: Algebra I (above average, not the highest class for an 8th grader though), Enrichment Language (Highest in language arts) and the rest are mandatory classes same for everyone.

Extracurricular: Soccer. Discontinued : Guitar, dance, vocal.

By the way, does anyone know anything about the letters? Or if, hypothetically, only one person applied from a state, are they bound to get in because of Andover’s “Youth from every quarter” motto. Thanks and feel free to talk about anything Phillips related here.

I believe that you fall within there range of acceptance but you have to remember the fact that people are accepted to Andover for a number of reason. But I would be slightly concerned about the ssat score. I am in no way able to truly know for the pure fact that I’m also applying into 11th grade and I am not a admission officer. I would ask though since I made the mistake on my chance post is there other things you might be leaving out? To get a full idea of who you are as a student make sure this post is a full picture of who you are. It is also smart to be apart of a few other clubs and things like that while also excelling in school. Hope you get in!

Your SSAT scores are below the average for Andover(94 is the avg.), however you are correct in saying this is not everything. I do have friends at Andover that scored well below the average, and didn’t have any other hooks such as being a “recruited” athlete. The admissions staff really does look at the whole person, so while you test scores, especially Reading/Verbal are far below the Andover averages, there are a multitude of other factors. Also, there are surprises every year. The admissions process is not perfect by any means.

Are you applying to other schools or just Andover?

I’m in drama club and have volunteered a lot too.

Center: Just Andover

Hey! I’d agree with the comments above, and also add that while being the lone applicant from a state will boost your chances, it will certainly not make getting in a sure thing.
