I am applying to Barnard and was wondering how much admissions officers look at the circumstances in an applicant’s life that affect her stats. Does anyone know?

I was frightened by this title…

My understanding is that Barnard is VERY holistic in their process and spend quite a bit of time looking at each app. I think they would definitely take outside circumstances into account.

I was frightened by the title too… anyway, i think Barnard spends enough time on every applicant and really looks at things other than just some numbers (or I hope so)…

Barnard is looking for people who they think will do well in the school, not just people with high diagnostics. If you went through a difficult time, then they’ll take that into consideration–they know that life is unpredictable. What’s important is that you demonstrate that you did the best you could, given the circumstances, and, if the worst of the difficulties are in the past, that you’ve made progress to rebuilding. Best of luck with your application!

They definitely consider an applicant holistically. My ECs suffered because of a serious illness I had. However, my essay was about my stay at the hospital, explaining indirectly to them how my time is occupied. I was accepted. Class of 15!
