Admit Me!: William and Mary, University of Virginia, and George Mason University.

Hello,

I’m wondering if someone could tell me my chances of getting accepted into the following schools: William and Mary, University of Virginia, and George Mason University. I would be very appreciative if someone could tell me their thoughts.

Academics:

  • Full IB Diploma Program Student
  • 4.25 GPA
  • Top 7.5% of the class
  • Mostly IB classes, though I took “three” AP classes (I dropped one due to a change of interest)
  • IB Chem. (HL), IB Math Studies (SL), IB History (HL), IB Language and Literature (HL), IB Spanish (SL), IB Anthropology (SL), AP Comp. Govt, AP European History, AP Computer Science (the one I dropped), Theory of Knowledge

Tests:
-1240 on the “New” SAT - I am currently preparing for the next one

  • 26 on the ACT
  • 710 on the World History SAT, though I’m not sure if the score is good enough to justify me sending it

Extracurriculars:

  • Archeological internship program at George Washington’s boyhood home: 11th, 12th
  • I design and build computers: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th
  • I do Olympic-style weight-lifting and bodybuilding: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th (honestly, I believe that this saved my life - I was incredibly out of shape for a time)
  • FBLA: 12th (I probably won’t put this on applications due to the short amount of time that I have participated in it)
  • My parents’ work schedules don’t allow me to stay after school for any extracurriculars (the internship required a LOT of maneuvering)

Extras:

  • Resident of Virginia
  • I am applying for Early Decision / Action for all of them
  • Counselor is able to write a very positive recommendation
  • Interest in History and Government

Unknown:

  • Admittedly, I received a minor (that is how the counselor will say it) 5-day (Junior Year) suspension for disrespecting a teacher after I received a bad grade in 11th grade; thankfully, the principal has generously agreed to write a letter stating that it shouldn’t be a deciding factor in admissions

Again, some feedback and tips would be most appreciated - this process has been nerve-wrecking.

how do u have a GPA when you are an IB student

Is 4.25 your weighted or unweighted gpa

Weighted. I believe that it’s around 3.9 for unweighted, but isn’t the average for William and Mary and UVa around 4.1-4.2?

Also, what did the previous guy mean about having a GPA while being an IB student? Is that a joke or something?

I’d say yes for GMU, and not as likely for W&M and UVA. Your SAT is pretty low for those schools, and GPA is just average for them. However, I’m not sure and I wish you the best. It also depends for which major you applied to, and your race

@Funnybunny98 Actually, I just improved my score! I currently have a 1340-1360 (1360 if they get my recent score).

Was the “1240” you mentioned for SAT initially a typo, and you really had a 1340 that you’ve already sent? (Your last post says 1340 and not 1240.) In that case, you seem very likely for George Mason, and possible (it really could go either way) for UVA and W&M.

If you did have a 1340 to send, I would hope you never sent the 26 ACT anywhere, because those schools wouldn’t require you to, and that ACT score is not nearly as good as your SAT.

@Wilson98 It wasn’t a typo, I just made a huge improvement on some tests, but the new scores have arrived. I had to study my butt off for the math section. Also, my new ACT score is pretty decent - 29.

Definitely yes for George Mason, with a good essay. William and Mary, I would say, probably.
