so im leaning towards Hayden but i was wondering if we were allowed to pick floors. i heard the mice avoid the higher levels…!

So I went around to all the dorms today, but really couldn’t get to the rooms. I can comment on the location and the impressions I got from the students and the area around though, and what my thinking will be when I fill out a request form.

Okay, alphabetically:

Brittany (very doubtful to be requested by me): Not the greatest building but it is on Broadway and 10 which is close to Union Square and that’s a plus. It’s like a solid 10 minute walk to get to class by Washington Sq… There are a solid amount of triple rooms (I’m looking to get a double or single if I can). There’s a common kitchen, no rooms have their own.

Founders (might request): Couldn’t get past the lobby, but it’s only about a block west of 3rd North whose location I don’t love. It’s a new dorm, and the people I spoke to there seemed to like it. I believe the quality of room is pretty good at Founders, better than the other dorms at least, maybe a little more roomy (this is a rumor I’ve heard, please verify for yourself). Founders seems like a cool place to be, but I wasn’t able to find out that much - only that it’s really awkward asking a complete stranger to sign you in… only one girl seemed truly open to it and she was meeting her parents and boyfriend so she couldn’t really help too much. This might make my list, but not quite sure.

Goddard (meh):Bite sized really, GREAT LOCATION! Especially great if you’re taking a lot of classes just east of the park (which you probably will be). Only 210 kids here, and 10 triple rooms so there’s a 1 in 7 chance that you end up in a room with 2 other kids. Also a community kitchen situation.

Hayden (probably my first choice): They have Low Cost Triples but seeing as I’m not paying tuition I don’t think I’m going to be cheap with the room (it’s about a 3000 dollar savings for low cost triple). There are 674 kids, it is air conditioned and “some rooms” have kitchens. My dream situation is to end up in a double with a kitchen. If you’re not in a low cost, you can’t be in a triple which I guess for some (like me) is good, but some may want more roommates to make more friends. There’s a small TV lounge with a couple old vending machines right next to the dining area, which seemed pretty open and nice. This will be def. be my first choice, but I understand it’s not for everyone. I’d say if you’re a slightly reserved personality that you might consider going elsewhere. Oh and I heard someone mention that there are mice but whatever, I don’t mind the little buggers too much. Hayden is really close to my house so it’ll make mooching for free laundry, food, and necessities like paper towels, shampoo, etc. much easier. And it’s close to Mamouns which is a big plus.

Rubin: Nice 5th avenue location (probably a very expensive building to own). There are also, like in Brittany, a bunch of triple rooms which again is appealing to some - not so much me. It’s a very very nice location, though once again no kitchens.

3rd North: 930 kids - so maybe if you want to meet a lot of people this is the place to be. As you probably know this is an apartment style residence hall. It’s closer to the east side, and thus St. Mark’s place which is a huge plus - but maybe not enough for me. If you are a social person, and somewhat liberal than you probably will find St. Marks pretty fun, it is a lot of bars, headshops, restaurants, if you want a tattoo it’s a good place to go too. 3rd North residences do have kitchens which is nice, and they do have a cafe area which has a grill and little international food station which I thought was really cool. If you have a good ID, the pour house is a good spot right across the street, it’s really a great bar (I plead the 5th). It’s also right by a couple movie theatres, Union Square, some decent restaurants in the area. It’s really not a bad place, but I think I’m going to so somewhere closer to the park and closer to my house (not because I’ll miss my mommy - because of laundry and the things I love by my house like the gym). Also, this is not the best dorm in terms of there being trains around. The things closer to the park put you within not so bad distance from most of the major lines in the city.

Weinstein: Very good location, forgot to take note of how many rooms are triples and such, but you can look that up if you’d like. They do have a food court (more expensive than the simple meals, so I don;t think any of us are going to chic-fil-a on a daily basis). They do have what is pretty much a mini convenience store downstairs, and the things that I really like are the location (pretty much the northeast corner of the park, a bit north of that) and that there’s a fitness center (though I don’t know what that includes and I imagine it’d be pretty crowded). Weinstein could end up being my 2nd choice.

I can try to answer other questions, just as I’m sure current NYU students can as well. Much of the background info I have on these dorms come from having many family friends at/graduated from NYU. For instance, my best friend is a sophomore and she was at 3rd North last year).

Hope this was helpful, see you guys next year

just to note, you have to apply for Goddard. there’s a seperate special application. Goddard is separated into “streams” of interest. don’t ask me any more about it, that’s as far as i know, lmao.

and yes, mice avoid higher levels. but every room has the possibility of roaches or mice. welcome to new york. :-P

Do you know if the North tower of 3rd North has been renovated?

Interesting. When I spoke to Housing, they mentioned there are two dorms under renovation. I am not sure which two they are, just that Founders is not one of them, being the newest dorm for Freshmen. Maybe the Housing Office will let you know which two dorms are being renovated if you call them.
