Admitted Freshman: BU or UR

I am interested in psychology, business, or something in science, but I’m still not sure yet. Here are personal pros and cons for both schools. Anything you can add or anything to consider in this decision would be great!

BU

Pros
Urban location
Diversity
Research opportunities

Cons
Big classes
Not much of a campus

UR

Pros
Campus
Small classes
Priority course registration (from scholar program)

  • even w the scholar scholarship bu and ur would cost the same amount of money for me

Cons
Richmond isn’t that accesible but I’ve heard ppl mostly on campus during their college experience even if they’re in a city
Lack of diversity
Lack of research opportunities ?

Thank you!

Check out the research on Richmond’s website at richmond.edu. Students have plenty of research opportunities all four years. Many freshmen work in research labs during their first semester. UR also offers/guarantees each incoming student a $4000 stipend for an internship or research experience. I often tell folks to look under the academic majors and when they do, there is a research link that explains certain research labs that are available for the undergraduates

While I am not familiar with BU, UR is wonderful and the small classes allow you to interact with the professors intimately. You will find a very vibrant, cross-knit community of learners and the research opportunities are phenomenal. UR’s med school acceptance rate is well above the national average.

Look at last year’s admitted student profile and you will see that the campus is quite diverse geographically and ethnically. Economically, UR is diverse as well since students in families with incomes of $60, 000 or less go free. Their tuition, room and board is paid for all four years.

The city of Richmond is only 15 minutes away and is very accessible. There are buses that transport students downtown and zip cars can be rented on campus. There are also many students who bring their own cars. Anyone can bring a car to campus so if that is a concern, I wouldn’t worry too much about that.

The professors are amazing and the courses are rigorous and stimulating/challenging but not overwhelming. They are accessible and really want you to learn. They care about you as an individual, not a number.

I a proud alumnus so I am a bit biased. My advice: go with your gut. Your heart always tells you where you feel at home.

Thank you! This is really helpful! If you wanted to go for a walk would you walk around campus? I live in a city and I appreciate that walking around different neighborhood. I want to get a feel for what taking a walk would be like right outside of campus. Do people do that? Thanks again!

UR has plenty of research opportunities as mentioned above.

You can walk around on campus, but I wouldn’t walk around campus off campus, since that is mainly residential areas with side streets that don’t really have sidewalks. However, campus is beautiful and you can take a walk around it. Some people take walks around the lake on campus.
