Advancement Opportunities

I’ve been accepted into my college of choice, but can’t decide between Civil Engineering and Mechanical engineering. Both fields have equal amount of pros and cons in my mind so the deciding factor is future career advancement.
What are some opinions about the differences, if there are any?
Do large fortune 100 companies promise lateral movement more than private companies/ firms?

On a side note, could any advice be offered on my first year at the college of engineering? I’m looking forward to it!

Thanks in advance

Are you required to make this choice now/soon?

If not, then hold of on locking yourself into this decision now. You’ll learn a lot in college that might change your mind.

Some first year engineering class may give you an introduction to different fields in engineering. Except for a field schools, you don’t need to pick a major to apply to school. Even for those schools, you may still change major later on.

I started as Civil, then transferred to Mechanical in the middle of sophomore year. At my school that was no biggie. I didn’t loose any credits.
