I'm planning on applying to many top schools, and I'm wondering if it could help me to get in if I apply to engineering because i'm a girl. It's very possible I will actually end up studying engineering (environmental engineering to be specific), but I'm not positive. Some of the places I'm thinking of applying to that require application to specific engineering schools are Duke, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia.

Doubtful being female will give you a hook at the specific colleges you listed. You can check the M/F ratio for those schools. You will need a strong application for each school and plenty of females are competitive in Engineering without gender as the deciding factor. May help but don’t count on it.

I’ll add that I’m Caucasian, my best subject is math, I got a 790 math sat I score and 800 math II, as well as 750 on Chem (normally required for engineering). I don’t have an ECs that are engineering-related, though.

If it isn’t an advantage, could it possibly be a disadvantage?

Just because it isn’t an advantage doesn’t make it a disadvantage. You have strong SAT numbers, great, but that is just part of an application. You need to have good LORs, ECs, essays, blah, blah, blah.
Apply and see.

I didnt mean to make it sound like being a female trying for engineering is a sure-in, or that it would be a hook, I meant that you could recieve lots of support for it and there are many groups promoting females in engineering. I don’t think being caucasian will hurt you, but as we all know, its not really a plus. If you have great math scores like that, i’m pretty sure you still have a good chance. As long as you’re well-rounded, I don’t think your EC’s will matter, considering there aren’t many specifically related to engineering.

Yeah of course, nothing is ever certain. And I do realize all that goes into an application, this isn’t a “chance me” type of question, I just wanted to demonstrate that my interest in engineering isn’t just coming out of nowhere. I’m just trying to figure out how I can give myself the best opportunity to get into some of the schools I want to go to, and if applying directly to engineering will help it’s something to consider.
