This is a pretty interesting post listing the advice various Chicago Maroon editors have given incoming first years over the years:

Collected Wisdom: Welcome toChicago - The Chicago Maroon

What is most interesting to me is the continual tension between what Chicago "should be" and what it "may be becoming." This debate has escalated recently, given the drastic changes in admissions over the past few years. It seems though, that even decades back, students debated the state of the university quite intensely.

The other interesting point about this article is that, once a "life of the mind" ethos becomes the mission of the university (rather than the "perpetuation of power" ethos found at many ivies), the debate seems to be unending. Preaching education above all else in an environment where most elites engage in a very different type of training has continually been a somewhat controversial position to take.
