advice about finances

So I heard by email from my top choice today (I applied for MA in East Asian studies programs) and they basically seemed to be saying that they wanted to offer me admissions, but had no financial aid to give, and would make an offer only if I said I would be able to pay my way. I applied to 1 or 2 fellowships, and I am holding out hope that one comes through, but otherwise, I just don't know if I could see paying full freight for something that even I have to admit is kind of a BS masters. So what should I do? Is it disingenuous to say that I can pay full tuition, when I might end-up turning down the offer for this reason? (I might still suck it up if I get no other funded offers, especially if a fellowship comes through.)

Also, has anyone out there been through Area Studies programs and have any thoughts? Is it worth it, in terms of career prospects or otherwise? I would love to attend, but I'm realistic... I mean, its not exactly law school. Any thoughts?

bumb. anyone, any input? would be much apreciated.
