i am a sophmore and looking into the arch field. i am preparing for college; loading up on the honors and ap classes, involved in many ec, keeping the grades to at least a 4.0, and looking into and visiting colleges. so far i seem to have the most interst in the pratt school at duke cooper union and cornell. i am interestied in arch. i love to draw and designing things really intrigues me. if anyone ahs any advice i would greatly appreciate it.

Keep working on your portfolio. Look online at the school architecture magazines to see what artistic standard the students use. Post your portfolio online next year to get feedback from current students.

Duke does not have an architecture school. They have an architectural engineering degree only.

Engineering and architecture are on opposite ends of the spectrum--with art on the archtiecture side and math on the engineering side. An engineering degree is a detraction for an architect.

Isnt there anyone in the field who has a degree in both arch and engineering? If i was to recieve an arch engineering degree i would be able to work as an architect right?

The only way you can work as an architect is if you then go do a M.Arch. This will take 2-3.5 years, depending on the school, and if the engineering program is set up to be considered a pre-professional architectural program. If it is, then the M.Arch should take two years. Otherwise it'a three or more.

There are arch engineering job listings on craigslist. However, you could not take the architecture licensing exam without the architecture degree. You could not become a licensed architect. I'm not sure what sort of engineering certificate you could obtain.

DS is no longer interested in Arch Engineering. I beleive when we were researching this that there is a 5 yr ABET approved degree. Like other engineering fields, to be liscensed you must take and pass an Engineering exam. The Univeristy of Kansas has a 5 year program in Arch Engineering and I believe their web site has some good info about the degree. I do know that the KU program is highly regarded and is quite rigorous.

THanks for the informayion everybody i really appreciate it. im trying to find out as much as i can before i have to acctually start filling out applications

PennState offers a 5 yr architectural engineering degree at the engineering school. The program is very different from their 5 yr architecture degree
