to all students considering trying to activate your NYU account, i would highly advise you not to. this was a very bad idea. i did it last night, along with many other unsuspecting applicants. i felt a bit apprehensive but just decided to try it and see if it worked. it did. however, NYU admissions officers DO read this forum and they CAN tell who has activated their accounts and it MAY have negative repercussions. i, for one, feel very ashamed for abusing their technology in this way. i would hate for my moment of curiosity to cause them to rescind my offer of admission. i called their admissions office and i feel a bit better after talking to two counselors, but it's still up in the air. i can only hope that they understand how we feel.
collegeconfidential may be more detrimental than helpful...at least in this case.

I feel the same way. We had no idea it would have such negative repercussions...it seemed harmless and I figured since someone posted the link publicly it was okay to do so. I'm so ashamed and quite upset and hope that nothing bad happens to us as a result of our curiosity and high interest in attending NYU.

i just saw this on the NYUHome login page and can definitely see how what we did can be construed as inappropriate despite our honest intentions:

"Access and use, or causing access and use, of this computer system by anyone other than as permitted by NYU are strictly prohibited by NYU and by law and may subject an unauthorized user, including unauthorized employees, to criminal and civil penalties as well as NYU-initiated disciplinary proceedings. The use of this system is routinely monitored and recorded, and anyone accessing this system consents to such monitoring and recording."

i did not see this page before because i clicked on a link through the original collegeconfidential post. ugh.

I feel the same way. I didn't go as far as to create a password, but I did try it out.
Now I feel really horrible.

I know "they" are reading this and I highly doubt they would consider rescinding your admission... that's just weird.

You never know. I'm worrid, though. I'm going to call...

I am sure that you are fine. I spoke to them. They don't like what happened, and they seem to forgive everyone. But I still think that this is their fault. They opened a window, and even if it was an inch, there are smart kids out there. I don't think by logging on you "hacked" anything. And I don't think it will affect your admissions decision. I think everyone should call and apologize and tie up their telephone lines!

yeah, i have called. i am glad this is being cleared up and i am anxious to move past this bump in the road and get my actual admissions decision.

but it doesn't matter who reads this forum.....there are no specific name involved....

but....as long as you didnt try to log in.....ur ok.....for others....i hope there are no negative consequences...

eji2006

i'm pretty sure that they can search through database using your stats..

Remember what happened to those Harvard kids last year :P

well i think we know this now.
