I’m a 10th grader interested in doing research in genetics and applied for Horizon Academic. They rejected me last semester when I applied, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the application?
Hey Aditya,
I think you can reapply for a future semester with them after 3 months, so just try again! Their summer program is harder to get into, so you could try applying for the spring or fall instead. For the application, try to flesh out why exactly you want to do research and go into as much detail as possible about your past experiences that you think will be useful or make you ready to do college research. They really like to see leadership in related clubs or strong competitive results in activities like science olympiad or USABO. Make sure your essays are 100% grammatically correct and that you look at the topics list and pick a few topics that interest you and explain why. Don’t just write about “why I like genetics”, but actually look at the sub-topics lists and indicate why you want to work on zinc fingers, for example.
