I am currently a junior majoring in CIS with a focus in Computer Networking. I've been interested in computers since I was very young and just took for granted that it would be the right career path for me. In highschool I was enrolled in Cisco and earned my CCNA. Everything was fine and enjoyable until late last semester. As time wore on, I began to just start feeling apathetic towards anything school related (my GPA took a hit as a result), but I held out and managed. I figured it was just summer angst, but as time continues to progress I feel less and less enthusiastic about IT as a career path. I enjoy helping solve people's issues and working in an IT environment, but I'm not sure if it's the right path for me anymore..

I'm not entirely sure where to go from here, any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

Try to figure out what you’re apathetic about. Is it really the career path, or are you getting tired of school? It’s natural to feel a little burnout several years in with more to go.

I ask because school and work really are very different. Your post says you still like solving IT problems. If it’s school, can you mix things up a little? Plan an internship, study abroad, or some really different electives, for example.

While I’m not apathetic towards school in and of itself, I believe it’s more focused towards my major, the networking portion of computers in particular, I feel like I no longer desire to keep moving in the same direction that I initially set out on. But, I’m not sure in which direction to go. I plan to go seek the advice of a counselor on campus. I’ve diversified my schedule with a few different electives; photography and a music appreciation class. I figure i’ll just take things as they come.
