Advice For College You Wish Others Gave You

as far as the bad teeth of the British goes -- I was just reading the NY Times Monday morning and they have an article about the British dentist shortage.

[quote]
paragraph 3: It is easy to be mean about British teeth. Mike Myers's mouth is a joke in itself in the "Austin Powers" movies. In a "Simpsons" episode, dentalphobic children are shown "The Big Book of British Smiles," cautionary photographs of hideously snaggletoothed Britons. In Mexico, protruding, discolored and generally unfortunate teeth are known as "dientes de ingles."

Thats nasty.

Maybe it got that way because from what I've heard he has quite a potty mouth in that movie :-P

Are we always talking about the same thing when we talk about "bad teeth"? A lot of the examples given in the NY Times article are genuinely bad, i.e. diseased and rotten teeth. But not having completely straight or "nice white shiny" teeth does not mean they are bad, it simply means that cosmetic orthodontistry is not seen as such a high priority. As an example, one of the dentists pressed the case for fluoridating the water supply; that gives strong, disease-free teeth, but can also lead to discolouration of the enamel.

when i was in the UK, no one didn't talk to me in lines and stuff, but part of that might have been because I was just an 11-year-old redheaded kid, lol

Now that I think about it, thought, I have heard a lot about how Americans are just overly-friendly. Like, if you pass someone in a store who you kind of sort of obscurely know and they don't smile or something, you feel kind of put off about it. We expect people to smile at us and talk to us randomly in line and share little comments with complete strangers. Yet at the same time, we are so rude to one another...how interesting :)

When you feel like you're going to sleep in a class, stand up and walk around. It seems wierd, but it works and most profs would rather have you awake and standing around than asleep in there class

I usually chew gum in a class where I fear dozing off. If I have to chew the gum, it keeps me awake.

Before i entered college , i thought my life become easy . Only 60 marks i should get can i pass the courses . So i didn't need to work hard . But i was wrong .I made myself so that i couldn't get 60 marks . Even 50 marks is a problem . So i failed a few courses .That was a big mistake .

Stellar_Jiang - periods fall right after the last letter of a sentence. No space between the last letter and the period. But, space after the period.

This thread might help.

Beware, the first week or two of college may suck tremendously. I was absolutely miserable for about the first week or so of school. It's seems totally ridiculous because I love it now, but just know that a temporary period of suckiness is normal even if it seems like everyone around you is having the time of their lives from the get-go.

Wait, why would the first few weeks be miserable? o.0

It's different for everyone, but I was miserable because I was alone. I didn't know anyone at the school, and I'm not the type to walk up to a group of people and jump into their conversation (even though I told myself all summer that I would try to be). The people across my hall all went out drinking the first few nights which isn't my scene; others knew a dozen or so people from their elite prep schools, so they already had friends, and it made me feel like everyone was supposed to adjust like ducks to water, and I wasn't. It took me about a week or so to make a few friends that I could eat with in the dining hall with, hang out with in downtime, etc. If you love it from the start, that's great, but if you don't, give it time.

Have a lot of Sex!..it will me make you feel better

People get used to college in different ways. If you had college classes before entering your first semester, then the transition is easier. However, some people just dive in after high school and they flounder for a while before settling in.

Don't fall in love in your first year. I did with a girl who was in my major and it didn't bode well.

Don't get too far ahead. I got enough credits to take a few classes earlier than I'm expected to take. At the rate I'm going I would take my hardest 4th year courses 3rd year. I can't graduate early but it is still a little crazy.

DO SUMMER INTERNSHIPS/RESEARCH/ANYTHING! This cannot do any harm.

I have never particularly found Brits rude as such but you do have that problem in places like France, especially if you don't know the language!

True a lot of Brit culture is anachronistic.. but it can't be all bad - they got cricket and the Ashes! :)
