Any new student advice for imcoming freshman?

Same as with everything else in life. You will only get out what you put in.

Challenge yourself academically and socially. Try those activities that you've always thought weren't for you, get out and do stuff. Get to know the other people. You will not enjoy yourself if you don't make an effort. Rose gives you a lot of tools to succeed, your professors, the learning center, your SA's and RA's, your floor mates.

We had a guy on my floor transfer out after fall quarter. When they told me he had left, I didn't even know who he was because he never got out (and he lived at the opposite end of the hall from me). He never hung out, went to meals with us, or anything, and so did not have fun. He was a native Hautian, so apparently on weekends he just went back to his home. He didn't make an effort and so didn't enjoy himself.

I say it again: you'll get out of it what you put into it.

That and have fun, be open to new things. Who knows, maybe you'll audition for one of the school plays, make it and have a ton of fun. There's opportunities to do almost anything, take advantage of it.

Thanks for the advice.....going on Monday for a visit again!

I'd also echo the advice of making a big effort to be outgoing and talk to a lot of people. You'd be surprised how receptive people are to random approaches for conversation. They're especially receptive at Rose because they probably have seen you around campus and recognize your face, so you're not a complete stranger.

Also: I'd highly suggest getting involved in a club or two. Clubs can be a big part of your social life. I also recommend that you rush. A lot of people here thought they weren't the fraternity/sorority type before they rushed. My roommate's girlfriend is definitely not the stereotypical sorority girl, but she's now very involved in leadership for her chapter.

Finally: enjoy your free time during freshman year. It's not as difficult, academically, as other years are. So go watch the Drama Club's plays, stay up until 3:00 AM Saturday morning playing Catchphrase with friends, go to technical talks that interest you, and try to enjoy your newfound college freedom!

Thanks Y2K and Nic you both have been very helpful with all your responses to me. Really appreciate all your help.

Can't wait for my visit tomorrow afternoon.

We apologize about the slushiness and cloudiness...Terre Haute weather is freakin' crazy.

The weather was not any different than Chicago. Had an awesome visit to Rose. The college is great!
