Advice for New Zealander

I am currently a year 12 student in New Zealand. Year 12 here is the 2nd to last high school year before university. So I will be attending university in 2010. I have been thinking for a while about doing my studies in the U.S. and the California and New York areas in particular attract me greatly.
As I have only visited America once and I didn't look at any colleges, I would like some recommendations of colleges that you think I should look into and/or apply to. At the moment I'm still unsure of what I want to do exactly; but I know that I either wish to study languages (and possibly go on to get a degree in interpreting), go down the journalism path or pursue screenwriting which is something I have always wanted to do.

This isn't a chance me thread, because I have yet to do any SAT's, I don't have my GPA calculated and we use a completely different grading system in my country. (NCEA) Instead I would just like some advice on what colleges you think I should look into based on my academic interests. However, if it helps you at all, I go to a very prestigious private college and at the moment my ranking is about 60 of 300. To be honest I know that ranking is quite weak, but I don't really try as hard as I should. I intend to focus more on my grades next year which may be too late (??) but I just thought I should point that out.
Overall my grades are quite good. We are marked on a scale of not achieved, achieved, merit and excellence. I get mostly merits and excellences and with more study I know I can get all excellences in all areas minus chemistry (which I am dropping next year as it is a waste of time for me).

Regardless of how much the fees are I most likely will be applying for financial support. Does my international status affect my eligibility for this and if it doesn't, are most universities helpful/generous towards international students?

As far as EC's go- I am a figure skater & rhythmic gymnast but not on a national level. I am part of the senior chorale and have performed in the school musical. I also do A LOT of community service, I tutor and I babysit.

So what universities (name them) do you think I should look into based on what I have told you?
