My daughter was notified in her application tracker that she’d been selected for admission at University of Minnesota. She was very excited (plus surprised to have learned so soon). We’re from the West Coast and I haven’t had a chance to visit Minnesota yet myself (my daughter did a campus tour and college information session with her dad over the summer). I’d love to see the school before she makes her final decision. Are there any specific visits/events for admitted students prior to enrollment? Anything else as a prospective (likely) Future Gopher parent I should be looking at? Thanks!
Here’s a link with info about visits for incoming freshmen https://admissions.tc.umn.edu/visit/freshvisit.html
You can click on the calendar to view events on specific dates.
We did our visits around our schedule. Admissions was happy to set up appointments for us (department/faculty member, lunch with current students, financial aid, housing, etc).
Usually in the spring, there are Dean’s receptions that the schools host. Since this creates a smaller group of people they do some team building activities that allows some of the kids to get to know each other and also a parents information session. This is the place where my daughter met someone who she thought would be fun to have as a roommate and they ended up living together.
Other than that, I think there was only the standard campus tours. I’m not sure what college (CLA, CSE, CSOM, etc) you are in so it’s hard to post other ideas.
@BayAreaParent53, I would also encourage attendance at a Dean’s Showcase for admitted students after the first of the year. One very important thing, the housing application portal for incoming freshmen will open in mid November so to get a preferred dorm be sure to watch for that and sign up early. The fee is $50 to get in queue and then changes to dorm preferences can be updated through May 31st.
@BayAreaParent53 which college at UMN was she admitted to? IIRC some of those Dean’s Showcases will include college-specific receptions and events.
Ditto getting in on housing early. Your daughter doesn’t need to finalize her choices until May; however, the queue runs by date of housing deposit.
Congrats to your daughter!
Thank you all for the great information. She was admitted to the College of Design. Sounds like we should look out for the applicable Dean’s Showcase when those are scheduled.
My daughter is also in the college of design so I know they have a Deans reception. It was in April I think.
I’m not specifically answering your question, but my senior also applied to U of M, and we are from the bay area. We flew out and visited a few weeks ago and LOVED the school and the campus. I was blown away by how amazing it was. During the same trip we also visited University of Wisconsin and University of Illinois.
My son just applied about a week ago. How long did it take for you to hear back? We definitely have fingers crossed that he gets in.
@ImASoccerPlayer it generally takes about a week to get your ID information but they’ve been having some issues so it might take a little longer as more students are trying to reach the upcoming deadline. Best of luck!
@ImASoccerPlayer She applied during the second week of September and was notified in the tracker of her acceptance over the first weekend of October. Good luck to your son!
Just a word of caution - rolling admissions doesn’t mean that you will hear within a specified period of time after submitting your application. All decisions for the EA deadline will be sent out by the end of January - that’s the only guarantee that UMN provides.
Right now practically everyone who has been admitted has had stats and course load to back that up and/or has a particular hook that UMN is targeting. Some have already been admitted with honor and scholarship, others who applied early are still waiting to hear an admission decision.
To gauge your chances for admission (regardless of timing), please check out this link and compare the stats to yours.
@JBStillFlying Always good to hear again! Still waiting, hoping that the wait is to try to give him his first choice option, before they push him to second choice. Also, of course, hoping for the second choice option instead of what I read happened for others last year. I know they say kids will end up where they are supposed to be, and who knows what the rest of the year will hold. I know for sure the rush to find other options might bring something unexpected for him.
Having twins applying for the same schools is not a lot of fun right now.
Last year plenty of applicants got deferred from first choice but admitted to second. A lot just depends on whether that second choice makes sense to the admissions committe, given the applicant’s stats, fit, and interest In a Plan B.
Congrats to your D19! S19 was admitted too but we have heard nothing about honors or fin aid. Does anyone know if that shows on the portal later or was he not offered anything?
@drewsmom17 congrats! The honors showed up on the portal about a week later for my D19!
