Somewhat unusual question. Touring Pitt (general tour followed by engineering tour) next Monday. Arriving Sunday afternoon and staying within walking distance of campus. I will have S19 as well as S20, D26 and…a chocolate lab. (We are driving across country and decided to work visit in with trip.)
Any outdoor restaurant suggestions where they might allow our dog to be with us? Can’t leave dog unattended at hotel. S20 will stay back at hotel with sister and dog during the actual tour but would like to be able to actually eat all together.
Second the Porch - esp the PIZZA! great view of Cathedral, expansive lawn and can walk doggy around Schenley Park from there. Hope you have great weather!
Thanks so much @amandakayak and @carachel2 Hoping for nice weather - my brother and his family are driving up to meet us for dinner. He is the one that put Pitt on our radar. Very excited to check it out. This is the only urban campus on S19’s list and I feel like it might be a good fit academically and socially (although everything on his list has to be a financial fit as well.)
I have not studied the link to know which places are specifically in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh (where Pitt is), but if anything is on the North Shore or the South Side (Jerome Bettis Grill 36 I noticed is dog friendly), those would be 2 logical places for a student to venture out to for night life and sports (the Panthers football team plays at Heinz Field). Not sure if you plan on seeing anything in Pittsburgh besides Oakland area, but this list might be helpful to get you in the right direction because of the dog. Shadyside is another neighborhood very close to Oakland and is fun with upscale shops and eateries.
I will point out that establishments on the North Shore between Heinz Field and PNC Park are a good bet if you are visiting that end of town as you explore. Pittsburgh has an awesome river area on the North Shore where you literally walk along the river where it is paved and developed with parklets, fountains, statues, restaurants, monuments, etc. Hope you like our yellow bridges!! You can rent kayaks to row in the river, and plenty of biking there too.
** The Three Rivers Arts Festival starts on Friday, June 1st and will run for 10 days!!* So the downtown area of the city will be bustling with tons of activities and attractions. Lots of things at Point State Park during the festival, and you can definitely bring your dog there. Then, just go over one of the yellow bridges (specifically, the Andy Warhol Bridge/used to be 7th Street Bridge), and you will be on the North Shore!! The Andy Warhol Museum is right there too on the other side.
If you are staying in Oakland, though, my info. may not be useful for this trip to Pittsburgh. Feel free to pm me if you have specific questions about anything. Hope you love our city and campus.
@Winky1 - thank you so much! I will check the link out. We are staying at the Residence Inn right near campus. I am hoping to arrive at least mid-afternoon on Sunday but we will leave immediately after tours on Monday. This is my annual trek out to family for the summer – a Suburban jam packed with me and 3 kids (10,16,17) and a 70# chocolate lab – driving from the CO mountains to the DE shore. Quite a production so we are limited in our exploration time. But I feel like Pitt is in a unique location (urban campus) and the engineering program has some unique features that warranted a visit before applying. I think if this ends up a top choice and S19 is accepted (with decent merit) we will revisit for an accepted students day by ourselves to really get a feel for the city as well.
My brother is a little south of Pittsburgh in WV. He raves about Pittsburgh all the time but doesn’t know the city well enough to make suggestions especially given our dog constraints. We really appreciate everyone’s help and advice! We can’t wait to check out Pitt!
Thank you all! Here in Pittsburgh now. Got in a little late yesterday so just walked campus a bit last night and then had dinner at the Porch with the dog in tow. Luckily there is a large tented seating area there - quick storm rolled through. Absolutely love the campus feel and the downtown area. Although the pet fee at our hotel was as much as the room, I am so happy to be in downtown and really experience the city itself. We tour the general campus and College of Engineering this morning and then have to head back on the road.
