Advice from a current Cal student

@Flower123, less than 10% of the applicants are referred to “augmented review” (to receive the supplemental questionnaire), so most likely you will NOT be getting that.

I am an oos. My SAT scores ar CR: 590 W: 710 Math: 740 SAT II Math: 750 Biology: 660. I am in top 5% (24/525) of my class and I have a UC GPA weighted of 4.7/5. I have dyslexia so obvious my CR score is going to be low. I believe i wrote great essays and I am applying for bioengineering. What are my chances???

Hi,
I have applied to Cal and hoping to get in. I am trying to get a better feel of my intended major. Is there a website that shows reviews/comments/ratings from Cal students on courses and/or instructors?

I am considering cognitive science. Any feedback or tips regarding cog. sci. major

I am also drawn to designing my major through the Interdisciplinary Studies Field major. Has anybody had experience doing this? Is it pretty difficult to get the plan approved? Any BTDT advice?

Can anyone please help me or at least give me some input? I’ve been worried sick for the past few weeks that people have been receiving supplement requests.

I am a US citizen who’s currently studying at an international school under the IB Diploma program. My grades are in the top 10th percentile of my school and I have an SAT score or 2130. I have also taken two summer courses at Cal worth 8 units and have received an A and a B in the courses. Within my application, I mentioned that I have spent an extensive amount of time on competitive pistol training (up to 30 hours a week, though I couldn’t join events due to my nationality) and had even wrote one of my essays about my journey of overcoming the gender biases which exist in the sport. I definitely expected a talent supplement, and yet I didn’t receive one. Is this a good sign that I’ll be able to get in, or am I rightfully worried? I believe that my essays are above average.

I know they aren’t required, but is it okay if I only take 1 SAT subject test for my future app? I’m a junior and will be taking PreCalc at my local CC over the summer; I’m planning to take Math II in October.

I’d take World History, but I’m on an immersion trip and wont be back in time for the June date.

So would be taking 1 SAT II be sufficient? Assuming my score is 700+?

To tell you the truth, I can give you all my opinions of your chances but the real result will come on March 30th, or whenever results come out. Therefore, I think my advice to you is to relax. You did your best work during your 4 years, and whatever happens happens. Good luck! Don’t stress out! This goes to all other applicants. :)

[Rate My Professors – Find and rate your professor, campus and more – RateMyProfessors.com](http://www.ratemyprofessors.com) or www.courserank.com or [Ninja Courses](http://www.ninjacourses.com) gives reviews on courses and professors. Take them all with some amount of grains of salt.
For the cog sci major, I don’t really know anything about that area. However, if you google uc berkeley cognitive science major, the berkeley site will give you a list of prerequisite courses and required courses for the major that you can look up on review sites to see if you’re interested.
As for the interdisciplinary studies major, I’m actually double majoring in this. The prerequisites are not hard. In terms of applying, just keep in touch with the faculty advisor and it won’t be that hard. You just have to write a 500 word essay that your advisor will help you through. Again, google it, and you can get more information about prerequisites, etc.

I think that judging on your scores you can get in…although, don’t quote me on that. In terms of not being asked for a supplement, they usually don’t ask for talent supplements often. Therefore, I don’t think you should be worried. Again, as I said in an earlier post, don’t stress out. Relax. Whatever happens will happen.

I think that taking only 1 SAT II test is fine, especially because the tests are no longer required by the UC schools. However, if you decide to take the SAT II, make sure that you do well on the exam…700+.

Is Cal’s campus vibrant during sport seasons?

“Is Cal’s campus vibrant during sport seasons?”

I think that it’s pretty vibrant during football season, especially with the Stanford game and pep rallies every Friday. However, during other sport seasons, it’s not super vibrant, except for the football game between Cal and Stanford.

Does Berkeley practically require extracurriculars from every high school student to have a chance for admission? My daughter got a 2190 on her SAT, a 35 on her ACT, and has a 95/100 GPA (25th percentile). But she has absolutely no extracurriculars because she only loves to learn other various academic subjects on her own. She has volunteered occasionally and has never had a job. Are her chances slim because of no ECs, despite the good grades?

Hi, are there any undergraduate research opportunities available or are they only for the top in the class

Same question as baneblades.

@solfam- Did your daughter explain herself in any of her essays? Did she explain it in any of the supplements (if she was supplemented)? My daughter sounds a lot like yours. She did do a play or two and started and VP’ed for a club for a year, and had a bit over 100 hours of community service, but compared to her friends, her activities pale in comparison because for most of high school she ended up taking care of me. We’ve had some pretty stressful years and I ended up on bed rest to avoid a heart attack. I could only get up to shower and use the restroom. My daughter had to take on everything for me and it really cut into her time for ECs. On weekends she had to go to her dad’s and help babysit her autisitic siblings.

But for the most part she was quite content with her schedule; she didn’t want to join 8 clubs and build yurts in Indonesia. Everyone has told us that she won’t get into UCB because she didn’t do enough. All she could do is try and explain as best she could in her essays and supplement. She has gotten into Davis, Irvine and Santa Cruz, but her dream is Berkeley. I have no idea if explaining herself will have helped. At this point all we can do is wait. But I tell you what, when this is all over I will need a good, stiff drink because the application process is exhausting, but more so because of all the darn speculating by others around us!

Good luck to your daughter!

Solfam: Like Zeppelinlover said, it depends on your essays. If your daughter explained her passions well, then she might have a chance.

wnrud709: Your academics look really solid. Now I’d like to know about your extra-curriculars and your essays.

Kiandeco: Your SAT score is a bit lower than I’d like but if you showed passion in your essays, I don’t see any reason why you would not get in.

To everyone who’s worried about decision day and whether or not they will get in: You guys have all worked so hard your four years of college. I cannot be the judge or the final say about whether you will get into Cal or not. I think that you guys should trust in the amount of work and effort you’ve put in and just have fun this week. When results come out, whatever happens will happen. Don’t kick yourself too much if you don’t get in because there will be so many other awesome college out there for you. If you do get in, then congratulations! And welcome to Cal!

Good luck! :)

One of my essay was about coming to the United States when I was around ten years old with my mother while my father had to stay in Korea to support us financially. Do essay readers know your race prior to reading? If not, was it a bad idea to identify myself as Asian?

I was just accepted yesterday and sent my SIR today! I had some questions about dorm life. Where would recommend staying as a freshman? Also, should I bring a bike for transportation around campus? I also want to bring a mini fridge but I have no clue why space is like or what I’ll need hahaa.
