Okay, this advice is coming from someone who's been accepted to Harvard. I've read alot of posts about seniors wanting to increase their chances of acceptance into good schools yet they have low GPAs. Face reality, you're not going to upgrade your GPA in February. Even if you did, you still might not fair well with other students with poor test scores. I basically have a full scholarship to Harvard because of my ACT score. Take the ACT on April 8 and if you don't get a 30+ then take it again in June. Really, this is your only shot left. If you wanted a perfect GPA or to be your class valedictorian, then you should have started getting ready years ago. But now, if you're a second-semester high school senior and you just want to get into a really good school, then ace the ACT. Take the practice tests and just do well. Peace!

i was under the impression that harvard did not give merit based scholarships...

at that point, your ACT score will not matter seeing as most schools have their decisions posted by April 1.

My scholarship did not come from Harvard. I received a private full scholarship to Harvard. lol, you get scholarships from more sources than just the institution itself.

Douglas, may I ask where your scholarship is from?

Wealthy retired banker runs a scholarship in my hometown, plus I received scholarships from my church and my parent's jobs.

Douglas...I saw your stats in your other post and your ECs are not that impressive. Heck, I'm surprised you got into Harvard. (ALthough my SAT scores were much worse than yours, along with my ACT score of 32, my GPA and ECs were much better and I know I would NOT have gotten into Harvard if I had applied, but let's just say I'm amazed you were accepted.)

Wow, I sound harsh, don't I? But I'm genuinely curious and your other posts weren't exactly amiable...

Maybe it's because you're from a small town in the middle of nowhere. That does play a role you know.

But seriously the guy in my school who did get into Harvard won national competitions and state math competitions with a really good SAT score and almost perfect GPA. He was also ranked 2nd in his class and did various extracurriculars with national awards. How the heck did you get into Harvard even if you scored a perfect on your ACT?

"Maybe it's because you're from a small town in the middle of nowhere. That does play a role you know."

I think that helps a lot. There were quite a few small-town kids I met at a summer program who were happy to be able to attend the local state university, and could care less about going out of state.

Does the ACT really make that much of a difference?

I was under the impression that it was just another test score.

...us Louisiana residents have an advantage in the college app games...we're state 49 (possibly 50 after the hurricanes) in education, and from what I've heard, LA applicants have significantly dropped this year to top colleges

in addition, after researching with a few top schools, for those who are displaced out of Louisiana, colleges are making them residents of the states that they've moved to or are currently located in

i think we have a troll on our hands....

Tell me, how would the June 2006 ACT count for 2006 college admission? Aren't decision letters sent in April?

there is some doubt about the authenticity of the Harvard scholarship!

Well, think again foodisgood. It is merely a recommendation. Who knows, many people take a gap year. However, I would highly recommend attending the proper school for your tastes even at the expense of taking a gap year. It's college, not high school, so where you attend is VERY important.

Interesting that with his supposedly perfect ACT score and almost perfect SAT score that there's not a single Douglas listed on the Presidential Scholars candidate for his supposed location of Louisiana...hmmm

See for yourself: http://www.ed.gov/programs/psp/2006/candidates.html

...how do you know that his name is Douglas?

...I don't know for sure. However, it's the best I feel that we have to go off of. Why else would somone put a name like Douglas in their username?

Maybe he was named after the great Frederick Douglass....

douglass obviously posted this topic to show-off his harvard acceptance.

I was invited into the Presidential Scholars program, but I didn't apply. Dellover, you're taking alot for granted.

Your name is automatically put on the Presidential Scholar's list if you qualify, regardless of whether you apply for it or not.

That's not true Clippit. I'm not arguing with anyone about this.
