Hello, everyone. I would love some advice or information about Cal Poly Humbolt. My child is an athletic recruit and has been courted by Humbolt, Sac State, U of Oregon, U of San Diego, and St. Mary’s. She loved the vibe of Humbolt. In the end, we want it to be our child’s decision as we think all the schools seem good.
Before the recruiting process, I knew absolutely nothing about Humbolt. I would love your advice! My child wants to be a psychology/business major. Are their opportunities for research, jobs, internships in the field of interest? Is there really a big drug culture at this school? What is the surrounding community like? What are the job prospects upon graduation? Any info will help us in this decision. We need to make it quite soon. Thank you in advance!
You can compare pay outcomes of recent graduates who received federal financial aid at various colleges for various majors at https://collegescorecard.ed.gov .
The campus will be offering a new major along these lines. That suggests that the drugs of choice may be different from that at other college campuses (most residential campuses’ drug culture is based on alcohol).
My husband’s nephew attended Humboldt State at the time (Cal Poly now), and loved it. He studied Marine Biology and was very active in research with a marine biology lab. He went on to medical school. According to him there was a lot of soft drugs on campus and a hippie culture. A neighbor’s daughter reported a conservative vibe more recently so I’m not sure what to think. Maybe a visit is in order?
It is in a small predominantly White town in a rural area, so it would not be surprising to find a more conservative vibe in the area, even though there may also be hippies around.
U of Oregon is the obvious choice for a cross country runner.
Because it is so remote, there will be a lot of travel time to meets. Look at the current schedule to see how many weekends that will be for her. It really does make a difference.
My daughter was an athlete. The sport was new to the school and the coach set up a travel schedule the first year that was brutal. Ten hour bus rides three weekends in a row, in April right before finals. She was exhausted. The next year the coach realized they were in Florida and many teams were willing to travel to them. For the final two years, they took one bus trip the first weekend of the season (in Feb) and that was it - they played 11 home games and the other 5 games were in conference so most 1-2 hours away.
But look at the current schedule so she can assess what will be expected for travel.
These are all great suggestions. Thank you, everyone. Actually, my daughter isn’t a cross country athlete. She is in crew/rowing. I happen to be using my son’s username. Sorry for the confusion, however, the advice still rings true. She visited already and loved it. It just seems so remote, and we worry there may not be access to jobs, internships, research that she could get in a more metropolitan area. In the end, it is her decision.
