I was trying to figure out if I can double major forensic anthropology and biological sciences, plus carry Russian language. I realize I need to take the requirements for each degree but it looks like there is some overlap, especially if I select the forensic biology option.

But I don’t understand general education requirements and how that effects the two majors. Forensic Anthropology seems to have a lot of Gen Ed, but Biological Sciences doesn’t. How does that work?

Can anybody explain this to me? From looking online it seems like there is no single Gen Ed requirement… or at least I can’t find it!!

I have a lot of credit transferring in that will help: 5’s on APs for English Lang & Comp and World History, plus AP 4 in US History. I also have 35 hours of university credit including 8 hours for Russian 1 & 2; 3 hrs for Age of Jefferson & Jackson advanced history; 3 hours for the Plays of William Shakespeare advanced English; 4 hours for Anatomy & Physiology; 3 hours of statistics for social sciences math course; 3 hours glass blowing; 3 hours intro to cultural antrhopology; 2 hours music; and 3 hours business law.

I think nearly all this credit will transfer after speaking to OSU and should count toward gen eds for the anthro degree. That is why I think I might be able to double major.

Today I learned that you are advised by each ‘major’ department separately, and that the gen ed’s are advised by an advising center.

Also courses in the major don’t count toward gen eds…so it looks like more math or stats UGH.

Anybody else ever double majored? This seems really hard to do…at least in 4 years.

AFAIK ([The Ohio State University Department of Anthropology](http://anthropology.osu.edu/about/programs.php)), there is no major in ‘Forensic Anthropology.’ Only a minor. I’m just pointing this out to make sure you know.

Anyway, GECs (what we call gen eds) do depend on major. You’ll definitely be able to do a double major in Anthro and Bio if you plan it thoughtfully. I’m thinking they’re commonly paired.

By “carry Russian language” do you mean take a Russian GEC sequence? Or a minor? Or a major? A Bio-Anthro-Russian triple major would be very ambitious and probably difficult to pull off. You could definitely finish out your GEC sequence, or maaybe take a minor.

@kelseyg - thanks for that correction. I have a full year of university level Russian already so would like two or three more years of Russian, plus maybe a summer abroad in Moscow. That is what I was meaning. I want to be fluent when I graduate.

I think that is doable with BSc anthropology and forensic science minor. But doubling with biology seems really tough without summer school a couple of summers.

I am bringing in 40 hours (semester hours) of coursework that hopefully will satisfy a great deal of my GECs (I believe). Most of it has been classified as “GEN” but is solid stuff that I hope my advisor will give me credit for.

An anthro professor at UTENN told me to double with biology, so that is why I am thinking of it. I plan to go on to grad school and they said it would help.
