Advice: Where to transfer for good/inexpensive English degree?

I'm 33 years old and in college for the first time. A community college. But I'm a smart guy, and pretty well read, I've just never been motivated to go to school until recently. My wife got her BA last spring, and so now it's my turn. What I love is English. I love writing, and reading, and writing about reading. I am working very hard and am hoping to have enough credits under my belt after 1.5 or 2 years to transfer someplace else. The thing is, I'm not sure where to go. I'm obviously not a traditional student, and most of the top-ranked liberal arts schools are way out of my price range, and I seriously doubt they would take me anyway. So what are some of the larger state schools with good English programs that would take a guy like me and not break the bank? I'm in the midwest, but would move almost anywhere (I've been looking for an excuse to move, anyway), so if it's in a cool area, all the better.

If your college GPA is strong, many many many top-ranked liberal arts schools would accept you as a transfer. I say that not because it makes the money issue go away, but to encourage you to not go into this process as a “second class” student just because you are older.

Most colleges, private and public, will treat you like any other applicant–and look at your transcript and evaluate you on your academic merits, not your age.

So with that said - after you get a semester or two of classes under your belt and you know what kind of transfer GPA you are going to be earning - you can better narrow down your choices.

What is your budget? What kind of places can your wife find work while you are in college if you are going to relocate? Do you want a small school? Rural? Public? Large? Artsy? Intellectual?

Move to california and go to one of the UCs.
