I would like to invite informed opinion by those who are about to graduate and have had a summer or two of job experience, or those who have recently graduated and are working or those that have graduated a while ago and are in the industry.
For short term or mid-term career -- Is it better to graduate from a known difficult target with a degree in chemical engineering and a mid-level gpa or to graduate with a very high gpa from the same school, but with a degree in something softer, such as Math or Econ or Finance?
Thanks in advance

Very high GPA.

First, you should major in what you like to do best with high grades. Most people don’t end up in IB even though they attend a target so you should have an alternate plan. BTW, I don’t regard math, econ or finance as soft majors in a competitive school.

What is it you are trying to do? IB, trading, sales?

Overall, attend a target, get a very high GPA, and impress somehow above and beyond this.

Good luck. It is about as hard as getting into Harvard. Ha Ha

It really depends on your goals - for IB, GPA counts much more than the major you picked from target schools. For other fields, majors matter more - for example, trading and quant, you want to stick with a math or econ.

It is safe to say that you need a high GPA to be competitive for top internships and FT positions in finance (regardless of field). If it is a question of high or very high, then it depends on the job you are going for and your interests - if you hate something, then don’t major in it.

hahaha, math is a soft major?
