I am pretty new here in this forum. I will not be able to send PM to anyone. I think need atleast 15 posts from me to be able to send PM.
We have applied to U of Ark, Fayetteville too. We had been there 2 weeks ago. Its only 25 minute drive from our house. Waiting for ACT scores to be sent from High school. My daughter too liked it. Its closer to home. Thanks again to everyone for all your suggestions It feels great to have someone while taking this stressful journey of college admissions.
My son toured MO S&T and UAH with an interest in Mechanical, and possibly aerospace engineering. He liked S&T a lot, especially all the project/club teams and programs that they participate in. Their graduates get jobs, too. What I didn’t like was how difficult it was to figure out how much it would cost to go there as an OOS student. They quote tuition based on 12 hours/semester, but engineers need closer to 17/semester to graduate. I talked to someone who said that they expect a lot of engineering students to take 5 years to graduate. That would significantly increase the costs! Your daughter’s ACT score puts her at the 25th%, and they do provide a lot of support for students who may need it, so it could be a really good fit for her.
Others have suggested UAH, but my DS knocked it off the list. The mechE program has grown in popularity quite rapidly (possibly due to their auto merit aid) . The faculty-to-student ratio is extremely high right now, class sizes are large, and there are a lot of students not graduating in 4 years. DH toured this one with DS and it was really disappointing to them, although the loved all the partnerships and opportunities to work with companies located right by campus.
Take a look at the University of Arizona - it has a very highly ranked Aerospace engineering program: USAF and Raytheon are right there in Tucson. Best of luck!
My daughter has been accepted into University of Arkansas, Fayetteville (Mech Engineering) today.
We are applying to Washington University, St. Louis, MO and we received the below Early Decision agreement.
We have already applied for Purdue and Georgia Tech on ED. I know its kind of reach for her score.
Can someone please let us know if we can sign on the below agreement.
====================================================================================
From the National Association for College Admission Counseling Statement of Principles of Good Practice:
“Early Decision (ED) is the application process in which students make a commitment to a first-choice institution where, if admitted, they definitely will enroll. While pursuing admission under an Early Decision plan, students may apply to other institutions, but may have only one Early Decision application pending at any time. Should a student who applies for financial aid not be offered an award that makes attendance possible, the student may decline the offer of admission and be released from the Early Decision commitment. The institution must notify the applicant of the decision within a reasonable and clearly stated period of time after the Early Decision deadline. Usually, a nonrefundable deposit must be made well in advance of May 1. The institution will respond to an application for financial aid at or near the time of an offer of admission. Institutions with Early Decision plans may restrict students from applying to other early plans. Institutions will clearly articulate their specific policies in their Early Decision agreement.”
If you are accepted under an Early Decision plan, you must promptly withdraw the applications submitted to other colleges and universities and make no additional applications to any other university in any country. If you are an Early Decision candidate and are seeking financial aid, you need not withdraw other applications until you have received notification about financial aid from the admitting Early Decision institution.
Purdue and GT have EA, not ED. EA is not binding. However, if your daughter is accepted to Wash U STL, she would have to go if her aid comes through. If it isn’t her first choice, do not apply ED.
Make sure you run the Net Price Calculator on the WashU web site. If those numbers aren’t workable then I would not go ED. Not being able to afford a school is the only out for an ED agreement and you would have been given a big heads up based on the NPC results.
Big state school sounds like a good fit to me.
And really understand how weed out works in any of your target schools. I am a bit mystified about those reaches because they seem pretty pointless. Focusing on schools that she can be successful in during her degree is very important for engineering. Look at whether the admission is direct to major or a secondary admission later on in the 4 yr plan. And as above, as finances are a thing, you want to know your numbers. None of your reaches would fit your financial criteria at full pay. What does her HS curriculum looks like? What level of math, physics, chem etc? APs?
WashU will be a reach with a 25-27 ACT.
Re: Wichita State University
Wichita historically has been a major aerospace industry hub, so it is not surprising that WSU offers aerospace engineering. However, the aerospace industry has been declining there over the past decade.
My daughter received acceptance letter from Purdue today :-). I am not sure if I can afford that.
She was accepted into Management.Any feedback on the school of management ?
@babu97 Krannert’s pretty nice but it’s not the College of Engineering. Did she apply for Engineering? It’s going to be next to impossible for her to change degrees in that direction once she starts at Purdue.
Wrong division for major and too expensive… Purdue should be treated as a rejection.
