Aerospace prospect in Austin?

Hi all,

I am currently in high school right now and am planning to major in aerospace engineering. I wanted to know if there would be any prospect for employment following a degree in aerospace (BS but maybe PhD) in the Austin area. I realize this is a hard question to answer as I will be out of college in 6 years (BS, ~9-10 years if PhD) and after research I find that aerospace jobs are hard to predict because they’re in a “cyclical industry.” (Can someone explain exactly what this means and how it will affect job prospects). Again I know it’s hard to predict but help would greatly be appreciated.

“Cyclical industry” means that sometimes the industry has good times (usually with good hiring) and bad times (usually with poor hiring and lots of layoffs).

There’s aerospace jobs in Texas. If Austin is literally the only city you’re willing to live in, you should choose a major that’s less niche.

Its really difficult to commit to one city for future employment in any industry, unless you can start your own gig. Agree with the above post. Go more general, like Mech E or EE or Computer Science if Austin is it. But having an open mind might lead you to a fantastic career elsewhere.
