I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked. I’m hoping to major in chemical engineering and I want to find colleges with relatively low out-of-state costs (sub-$30k) that aren’t rigorously selective. So far, I’m interested in South Dakota Mines. Do you know of any others that fit that description?
What’s your home state? In-state and reciprocity rates will affect which schools come in at or below your price point.
SD Mines is a good one for quality+affordability.
University of Maine has its Flagship Match program, so if your state flagship would cost you under 30K, then Maine would too. (And it has not-too-competitive ChemE.)
U of Utah has its path to residency after the first year, so even without merit $, your COA would come in comfortably under 30K for years 2-4, but you’d have to take an additional 20K hit for the first year. Excellent engineering programs that might be worth a one-time loan to amortize the first-year cost.
Well, Michigan Tech could be a good fit, but even in-state is still a couple thousand over your 30K mark - worth a try to see if they shave off a little with merit, since admissions aren’t too competitive. Michigan unfortunately doesn’t participate in MSEP reciprocity. U of Maine would be 32K for you, so again maybe in reach if you could get a little merit.
For the most part, the most affordable OOS flagships will start above your price point, but modest merit awards might get you where you need to be. Look into North Dakota and Wyoming.
You could also look at some of the more affordable U’s in Canada - I believe Memorial in Newfoundland is one example but others are more well-versed than I.
Also look at U of Akron. OOS COA is a hair under 30K, and they guarantee fixed tuition/fees/room&board for all four years. They are particularly known for ChemE - polymer science/engineering in particular. (There’s no bachelor’s in polymer science, but there’s a minor which students interested in this specialty pair with the ChemE degree.)
Florida State (if you have a 31 ACT and earn in-state tuition); Arizona if you have a 3.9 UW. UAH and Alabama can be dirt cheap. MS State, Arkansas. Bradley potentially. Southern Miss, Missouri Science & Tech, New Mexico Tech.
A lot will depend on grades/act to see what kind of merit you can get.
University of Toledo offers in state rates to Monroe Co., MI residents and also provides merit aid for modest stats. The out of state fee is often offset by larger merit aid. It has a mandatory (paid) coop, so engineering students are sure to get some real world work experience.
The Wisconsin directionals might work, and come in below $30K. UW-Stevens Point has a specific Chemical Engineering major, and UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire have packaging/plastics engineering majors that come close.
