African Americans at uva

Are African Americans treated fairly here? I've heard some horror stories from others and wanted to get different opinions from people in this forum. My main question are people racist and really just full of stereotypes of black people there?

I think your question is not premised accurately. Your question should address the actual quality of life for students in general and Black folks in particular at UVA and Charlottesville. Will you encounter biased professors or classmates? Possibly. But try to discover the resources that are available as a student and as a community member. College is full of people whom you may bump heads with. Your challenge is to go over, around or through them to achieve your objectives.

I have a feeling that there are not many current African-American students reading this forum, which is why you haven’t received an answer. It might be a little presumptuous for the Caucasians or older alums on this forum to try to answer your question about the experience of current African-American students.

I went to UVa many years ago when African-Americans were the only non-white group at UVa, and they tended to self-segregate. Now, there are large numbers of Latinos, South Asian-Americans, East Asian-Americans and international students, so I would expect the U. and Cville is more tolerant, diverse, open-minded and accepting in every way.

nms – you might try contacting UVa’s Office of African American Affairs to try talk with folks knowledgeable about the climate at UVa today. See [Office of African American Affairs, University of Virginia](http://www.virginia.edu/oaaa/)

My initial thought to myself was forgot about what other people may think and how people may look at me and just use my resources and use the uva name for my future I just didn’t want to be caught off guard by anything. Also wanted to get experiences from other just for more info and thanks again for reply and i will take your advice contact the Office of AA affairs office for any more questions
