African or African-American??

Do colleges have preferance for one or the other? Or are they treated equally (afirmative action wise)?

If the applicant is not a US citizen or perm resident, then he/she is considered an “International” applicant (albeit from Africa). This is the worst category for admissions to top schools.

No I don’t think you understood me. On Common app, when indicating race, if you click “Black” there is a follow-up section that says to indicate “Which best describes your Black or African American background”. The choices are U.S African-American, African, Caribbean, or other (I guess the other would be like latino/Brazilian or something). So I am asking if non-interrnational African of U.S African-American is more advantageous for afirmative action.

I don’t know. Why don’t you just check off which one best describes you? Are you or your parents immigrants from Africa? Then I would check African. If your ancestors are part of the slave trade diaspora such as many black Americans would cite as ancestors, then check that off.

Rather than try to “game” it, just check off the best descriptor. Frankly, I think it doesn’t matter to the colleges. If you’re US or US Perm Resident – then it’s all good
