After the 4 year degree

Good morning all:

I'm not sure if this is where I would post this, but here goes.

My D has graduated from PSU this past May with a Bachelors in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. I'm very proud of her accomplishment as she graduated on time ( 4yrs). I'm a single mom, considered middle class; however, the financial assistance provided for OOS wasn't the greatest as we lived in NJ.

Loan repayments are knocking on our door and with the current job situation, she has begun to work in her field as a Junior counselor for a Women's shelter in PA. The income is not the greatest, but she's gathering the experience and i read that for her career choice, she will need a masters degree.

Now, I need to educate myself on this repayments of both Government and private loans so that we don't fall behind.

Any advice? Where do I search for information that I could understand, because in reality it all sounds Chinese to me.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Please post this to the Financial Aid forum. You need the help of the experts there.

Yes, go ask this question in the financial aid forum…but I noticed you used the term “we”…so when you ask the question be specific. There are things that students can do to lower their monthly payments on “their” loans - income based repayments and other options.

It sound like you, tha parent, also have loans? PLUS and Private? Be specific when you repost your question so that responders can address specifics.

Thanks. I will repost… When I mean “we” is because the government loans are under her name and the private loans, I co-sign for her.

Govt loans should have an adjustable payment depending on your income, ( sometimes there might be something for a service job as well) but you would have to look at the original contract for private loans.

Neither of my kids had to take out private loans for undergrad & grad school is up to them.
But I must say, your daughter should be very proud she was even able to find something in her field. Perhaps she will able to make contacts to find funding for grad school.

Michina, just an idea for your daughter… I got my Masters degree almost free from one of the most expensive universities in the US (George Washington University in DC) by getting a job at the university and taking advantage of their free tuition for employees. Most private colleges have free (or reimbursed) tuition for employees, even if you have to work full time and take classes as a part time student, it’s still very do-able. My sister did the same at American University. Congratulations on her graduation and good luck!
