I know there's no Air Force ROTC Detachment at William and Mary, but is it possible to do Air Force ROTC with a detachment at another university while attending W&M?

Unfortunately we don’t think so. W&M and Christopher Newport University have a joint Army ROTC program. There are likely Navy ROTC programs on the Southside colleges and universities (meaning those in VA Beach and Norfolk).

W&M Admissions,

Do you know if the Army ROTC has a deadline that (hopeful) incoming freshmen should apply by? I’ve searched the site and I’ve sent an email to the chair (I’m waiting on a response), but I’d love to read any information you may be able to offer.

Also, how popular is the Army ROTC program at WM? In your estimate, how many scholarships a year do they offer?

Thanks!

Ladyspark, unfortunately ROTC manages its own admission and scholarship process so contacting them for that info is the best means of getting the correct information. You could also call them (757-221-3600).

As for scholarships, many students will first apply for the four-year national ROTC scholarship. The scholarship monies controlled specifically by W&M’s ROTC division are awarded to students who choose to enroll. It’s not something you can apply for during the college application process. You can only apply for those once deciding to attend W&M.

Because our program is joint with Christopher Newport the internal monies are shared between students at both institutions. Sadly, we’re not sure exactly how they decide which money goes to which students and how much money is available.

This link to the W&M ROTC page.
[William & Mary - Military Science](Military Science | William & Mary) or google W&M ROTC
If you click on the scholarship tab, it will give you all the information regarding ROTC scholarships for the 2011/2012 year. There are 3 types of ROTC scholarships. I believe the deadline was in Dec. You’ll have to check on that.
Also, wanted to say the W&M ROTC provided my husband ,an 1988 W&M grad, with an excellent scholarship . It enabled him to complete his education at W&M which lead to a stellar career in the Army. He is now a Colonel with 25 years of service. I may be biased, but I recommend any ROTC scholarship opportunity for students looking to fund their education. Be aware not all recipients must become active duty. Another 1988 grad choose the become a reserve officer . He drills 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks per year. He has also been called up to serve overseas for up to 6 months when needed.
