Ok, so I FINALLY finished my NYU application & essay...and I stopped being stressed for a while b/c I thought preparing for my audition wasn't gonna be a big deal at all...

MAN, WAS I WRONG.

I need so much help! First, I have no idea what 2 monologues to do b/c I haven't really done one before. I've only read lines for auditions in the past. But I know this part of the forum isn't about auditions, so here's my point:

Whether I figure out my NYU auditions or not, I'm not confident about getting in...yeah, I should be, I know- but I don't have the amazing grades in the amazing classes that everyone else has...I'm just hoping my talent will override my academics. So my problem is this: OTHER SCHOOLS.

Yes, I've been HORRIBLE about waiting the last minute; I know that. You just have to understand that this year has been a nightmare for me & I've only been focusing on the school I'm currently in...instead of the one I desire to go to. Now that I'm trying to get my goals up & be responsible, I'm CLUELESS.

I'd really like to know what schools are the best to literally go ALL-OR-NOTHING for my dream of Broadway. I plan on getting a BFA, but I just don't know where to apply now that it's so late! I'm going to try to apply to Ithaca, but the deadline is this Wednesday...I'm too late for BoCo, and those are pretty much the only schools I know of.

I'm from Alabama. Has anyone ever heard anything about University of Mobile's musical theater program? I've heard they've sent people to Broadway & Disney World before, and it's actually a great school...it's just that it's close to where I live now & I'd really rather go out-of-state. University of Mobile is a possibility, but New York is really pulling at my heart strings....

My parents are in the middle of a divorce & extrememly stressed out, so they haven't helped me at all- they don't support or believe in me b/c they think my dream is a joke...mainly b/c I refuse to settle. I don't want a backup plan & I don't want to MINOR in theater. I believe I can go far; I just need the guidance b/c I can be pretty irresponsible with my time...I want to apply to many more colleges, but I just don't know what's possible now! And if worse comes to worst, can I apply to the next semester with the same oppurtunities? I don't wanna put off college for a semester, but I feel like I have no choice.

I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get where I need to go, but I just feel helpless. I wanna go for my dream more than ever- LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE! Or at least it should be...

Oh yeah, I have a 3.5 GPA and I only made a 23 on my ACT.

Am I hopeless?

BorntoSing:
My daughter is in the MT program at the University of Oklahoma, and she LOVES it. With a 3.5 GPA you would (I believe) be automatically accepted to the university itself. As a resident of Alabama, you might qualify for the special in-state tuition reciprocity deal available to students from southeastern states where the MT programs do not have the same offerings. With your parents in the middle of a divorce, the financial picture would be much rosier at OU than, say, NYU or Syracuse. ACCORDING TO THE WEBSITE, there are still audition dates available (of course, I don't know if they have filled up or not):

Friday, Feb. 23, 2007 Application materials must be submitted by Feb. 2.

Friday, Mar. 2, 2007 Application materials must be submitted by Feb 9.

Friday, Mar. 9, 2007 Application materials must be submitted by Feb. 16.

You should know that a pre-audition is required, but this could be done by videotape (call the department for videotape requirements) or through the unifieds or many drama/thespian competitions/conferences.

The link to their application info is:
http://www.ou.edu/finearts/musicaltheatre/oumt.htm

You would not be able to apply for spring semester. This is probably true of most MT programs.

Have you looked at University of Alabama? On another discussion list I heard people talking about it and what a strong MT program it had.

I second your considering Alabama (Tuscaloosa). I have a (soon to be) relative that just graduated from there with an upper level music degree and she did a lot of accompanying for the (relatively new, I believe) MT program there. She had good things to say about it, and I think you should check it out for SURE!!!

Best to you...take a breath and just get it done! I am sorry it's been such a rough year for you, but you can still get in a great school...

Actually a 3.5GPA would not get you automatically accepted into OU unless you are in the top 25% of your class or you have a higher GPA. But it is still worth a try.

Don't know if you can manage it or if its worth the risk but if you can get to any of the unifieds (NYC is this weekend Feb 3 & 4) there will be some walk in opportunities and that would be a last minute options for some schools as long as they have spots open. You could check the unified lists and then call some schools and see if they have room or if you have the money and or maybe a friend to stay with you could just go and take your chances. You should be able to get several auditions in those 2 days. Be good to yourself my d would definately say you need to follow your dreams even though at this point after 3 auditions we know as little as you as to where she will end up going.

In terms of deadlines, a school with rolling admissions is University of the Arts. It is in Philadelphia, PA, and still have tsome audition dates for MT (though I don't know if they are full). Go to http://www.uarts.edu/admission/ugrad/approcess.cfm#13 and about 3/4 of the way down the page are their audition dates. The application has to be in 2 weeks before your audition, but I auditioned there in Dec. and it seems like a pretty great school. Philadelphia is also a really cool town. There is a forum about UArts for more info if you are interested.

Good Luck!

NotMamaRose, I haven't looked into Alabama b/c it's one of the schools that EVERYONE here is going to...it's either Alabama or Auburn, and I really want somewhere completely different. But I might have to check it out anyways b/c I want to go to a college for an amazing program...that's the most important part. Thanks. =]

Mtmommy, thanks! I've heard about OU before, I do believe. :]

Churchmusicmom, thanks for the encouragement; I really need it right now! <3

Shelli, I might sound like an idiot...but what's a unified? Does D stand for daughter? lol I just now thought of that. I WISH I could go to NY, but I don't know anyone up there, so there's no way I could go...but thanks for mentioning it anyways; I really appreciate it! <3

Kasl, thanks so much- I REALLY need to look into that school b/c a lot of people have been telling me about it- I'm gonna go check out those forums. :)

Sorry to hear about your parents and their situation.

Maybe you could also consider the MT programs at Birmingham Southern and University of South Alabama.

You might want to consider Birmingham Southern, it is a Methodist college as is OCU. I know they have a great music program and MT.
