also>SAFTEY?

udel saftey an issue?
is there really a rape path?
and like muggings every night??
ahhh help thanks

If you go to their website, you can recieve e-mails about crime incidences. I have been reading them, and apparently there are incidents of mostly robberies around campus. Haven't heard about any rapes. As in any school which doesn't have an isolated campus, there will be incidents, and students should really try to not ever walk alone at night.
EVERY NIGHT is definitely an exaggeration! There are about 1-2 incidents a month though, so again be careful to travel in groups, or call for an escort if you need to travel around campus alone at night. My son feels very safe there, but he's a big guy who is probably not a likely target for robbers. By the way, he's a freshman and is very happy at UD!

gummdrops - As with many scare stories, there may be a tiny kernel of validity to the claims. But use some common sense and you shouldn't have any trouble. (Do you really think Newark DE is riskier than say the neighborhoods around UPenn? Do UPenn students have the kinds of trouble you refer to in your OP?)

There is a path from the Rodney dorms that leads down to Main St, along the railroad tracks, that the police encourage students to stay away from. It is not lit at night, and is not part of the campus. There is really no reason to even be on it... In general, my son hasn't found safety to be an issue. Like every where, you just need to be smart.

ooh anybody else?

You can call for an public safety escort at any time after dark and they will usually drive you to where ever you want to go. You can also take a shuttle bus, which I find very convenient. They run until about 4pm. University police also have a pretty strong presence (especially at night). Like any college town, there is crime and you need to take precautions.

I'm a freshman at UD and the campus is safe. I wouldn't walk home alone at night, being a female, but then again i wouldn't do that at any campus.
I live by "rape rpath", or whatever it's in between the two freshman dorms- Rodney and Dickenson. It's not unsafe, the name is sort of more of a joke because the path is sort of unlit, but I've never heard of any violence there. There have been a couple of crimes in the beginning of the year, but if you're not out at all hours in shady areas doing things you're not supposed to be doing, you'll be fine. I've never felt unsafe at UD.
