I plan on applying to Cornell Engineering.

Should I apply to an alternate college just in case I don't get in?

No. 10char.

no actually applying to an alternate college may lower your chances of admission to engineering. take my word on this

what about for someone applying to college of arts and sciences? would putting an alternate lower my chances?

Alright, you guys sound pretty convinced.

but why??

Well a) Unless you can convicingly write two essays about your equal passion in both subjects (hard for something like Fashion and Mechanical Engineering) then one of them clearly shows as only being there as a safety net

b) It shows a lack of commitment. Some colleges even consider it against the student. AAP is an almost automatic reject if you put down an alternate college.

c) The Engineering acceptance rates are high enough as it is. The chance of you being in the extreme minority whose application not only gets forwarded to the second college and being accepted there are slim to none as it is. So don’t bother.
