Alumnus and interviewer for the Alumni Admissions Council here. Ask me anything

mylondoncalling:

In short, yes all your questions.

Lot’s of kids do go abroad and intern and something that’s really unique to Brandeis is the Justice Brandeis Semester. There’s a lot to it, so check out this link which has all the info.

Co-op programs like Northeastern and Drexel are a bit different in that they are usually five-year, pre-vocation type programs. That being said a school like Brandeis offers lots of networking opportunities, etc.
Check out this link for more info on this:

Good luck!

P.S.: As far as location and business opportunities, keep in mind that Brandeis is only nine miles from Boston and there is a train station right on campus.

thanks for the quick reply!
i just got wait listed though :-/
…totally gutted, i dont think there’s a chance i’m going even if they ultimately accept me

Bump for 2010!

I’m a transfer from a community college, hoping to major in some combination of philosophy, Judaic studies, and math. I have three questions, and I hope you will be able to answer at least one:

First of all, how would it look if I were to write a second Honors thesis with the same professor (the first was in religion; the second will probably be in either religion or logic)? We don’t have a lot of offerings in philosophy, and I’ve taken three of his classes already. Does this happen often? I also can only take 100-level philosophy classes (actually, we only have 101-102). Without seeing my school’s catalog along with my transcript, how would it look if I retook one of these lower-level classes again?

Second, should my essays cover a wide range of topics, or should I show that I am dedicated to a few select interests?

Third, should I use my extra space on the Common Application to explain my bad high school grades, or to include a resume?

Thanks!

@fancyheader:
I think you should do whatever you think will present the best, most accurate picture of you as a candidate.

I would not bother trying to “explain” bad HS grades because:

 1. There really is no such thing as an explanation, they are what they are.
 2. Your college grades will matter much more anyway (and I’m assuming from your posting that they are considerably better than your HS grades).

Good luck!

P.S. Make sure you have an interview!

deisman: They said they don’t interview transfers, but I actually did get to “sort-of/informally” interview with one of the people from admissions…and I wrote about it in my essay :p

Hi deisman,

Does Brandeis generally accept two students with the same profiles from the same high school Early Decision?
