Within the last month, I've gotten two letters from Alumni and a phone call, and I'm just curious how many others have gotten. Also, who wrote your letters? I'm also curious if its the same two people mass producing these letters.

I think its pretty cool to be getting these letters from these people high up in companies, its pretty shocking to me.

So far I've gotten letters from Bob Pease - President of the Shell Trading (US) Company and Gregg Lowe - Senior Vice President of Texas Instruments. Gregg Lowe even gave me his phone number and encouraged me to call him if I had any questions or just wanted his perspective of Rose.

I was considering Georgia Tech since it'd be a bit easier financially, but this has started to make me think maybe Rose would be better.

I also received a letter from Mr. Pease... I would love to get one from the TI guy though, I always thought that it would be pretty cool to work there!

That's one thing you find at Rose are alums who really, really love the school and like to get involved with the current student body. There was a basketball game this year where we were celebrating one hundred years of Rose-Hulman basketball and we had basketball alumni's there from the 1940's which was pretty neat to see, but what was really neat was one of my buddies was all painted up for the game and an alum from the 60's wanted to get his picture taken with him and he did, even though he got some body paint on his suit jacket, he was still really happy about it. On two occassions I've run into alumni on campus, once it was a guy wandering on my residence hall floor on Friday night of homecoming weekend reminiscing about his days back in Speed, who also happened to be there that week for the career fair from Dow Chemical and the other time it was a dad who was taking his kid to a program Rose has for middle-school students in the area. In each case, I had about an hour conversation on a huge range of topics with the alumni's, ranging from how Rose has changed to what life after Rose is like and everything in between. Both were very good experiences for me. So yeah, just thought I'd share some stories.

sounds like they send a letter to everyone...
kinda takes the specialness away huh
success stories are found at every school...and you will be a success no matter where you go IF you have what it takes... if not you will not be able to hide behind a school name... if you know what I mean.
also... my son's friend goes to rose and they hire kids to promote the school. Nic do they pay you too?

Collegepoor, it's still a nice gesture for the alums to send letters. Also, practically every college has students working in admissions on work-study - which could be considered as being paid to promote the school.

I appreciate all the current students who post and answer questions on CC.

All schools hire students to promote their school. Why do you think those students giving tours around campus are there? Inversely, I don't think they are paying the alumni to send these letters. They are already making very good money.

Regardless, getting a letter from an alumnus that high in a company is still very interesting because its never expected. It doesn't matter if I go to Rose or not, I'm still going to like these letters I got.

When my daughter was trying to decide on the college...she called up a CFO that graduated from Rose. He was more than happy to talk with her about Rose. She initiated not him. She wanted to get his perspective on Rose.

My wish is granted; I received a letter from Mr. Lowe, the Senior VP of TI! I really do appreciate it, especially since I think it would be an awesome place to work!

EVERYONE got the same letters this year, last year...you get the idea
they are not worth the paper they are copied on. but if that is what it takes to make you feel good and happy, I am happy too
we got a free ride to Rose but are having 2nd thoughts

I'm not sure I agree with "they are not worth the paper they are copied on" - obviously if these folks are willing to attach their name to these letters going out, they must have been satisfied with the education they received...I think that means something. And, I thought your son received 20k from Rose?

Anyway, FWIW I received letters like that (I think I received one from the Shell Trading Company guy). Like collegepoor said, there are success stories at every school - but I did appreciate the letter when I was making my college choice.

If you are unsure, I encourage you to try to contact a Rose alum and ask them about their experience. Before I decided on Rose last year I contacted an engineer that one of my HS teachers had worked with that graduated from Rose in 1990, and his comments were very helpful.

Indymom, although they are form letters, and I do realize that they are, I haven't received any similar letters from alumni from any other school that I've applied to. I appreciate the gesture, especially since TI is a company that I have an interest in. I think that you should stop being so cynical, especially since, according to your post, you got a 'free ride' to one of the best engineering schools in the country. I'm not sure if it's ego, but I think you need to be a little more sensitive to the fact that these Rose alumni have maintained contact with their school to the point where they are willing to send out letters to prospective students.

Look at it this way - these are alums who value what Rose-Hulman has to offer and are probably willing to HIRE R-H students on graduation. It's proof that an alumni network exists for R-H.

Well, both of mine were from Texas though thats almost on the other side of the country for me. My guess is that it may have to do with your prospective major.
