i DON'T know how i look to colleges... i fell in love with vassar, wesleyan, etc. but honestly i might need to be more realistic... but who knows??? everything is telling me different things! naviance for one is not being too kind.
here is me (im a rising senior)
ive been an officer for three years in my drama club/thespian troupe
my position for senior year will be community service representative of thespian troupe
im HEAVILY involved in theatre- every show pretty much
i want to double major in it somewhere- im cool with auditioning and all that
im in french club and womens choir
im an officer in the national honors society
ive been in key club and student government association
obviously drama club
and thespian troupe
im a camp counselor

my school has a weighted gpa, so at the end of this year i hope to have just over a 4.0 (that sounds GOOD but its really just okay (like seriously some people have 4.5's and 4.6's) because like i said honors and ap classes are out of 5) but we don't know yet because our report cards havent come

i took one AP class- i could have taken up to three over my high school career so far- next year im taking three in one year though...
i took the AP test for it but dont know my score yet (it was AP bio)

i took the SAT II's in literature and AP Bio

my SAT scores were a 1440 and 2110
CR-780
M-660
W-670

my ACT score (with writing)
was a composite 32
reading- 36
math-28
science-29
(or was math and science 27, 28? i dont remember and dont feel like calculating if my cumulative score makes sense)
writing-33

IM LOOKING FOR
liberal arts school! (maybe not if the university is medium/small but a liberal arts school is probably where i would fit the best)
NOT rural
in the new york/boston areas preferably, but pretty much new york massachusetts connecticut vermont
strong programs in psychology/theatre (ability to double major)
SOMEWHERE I CAN GET IN!! and thrive! haha

thank youuuu tell me if i left something out

naviance? its so skewed though because people apply to some schools as safety schools and get in but wouldnt go there so that throws the average up REALLY high

If you like Wes and Vassar, by all means apply to them. Your ECs look good, your SAT score isn't bad (could you take it again and bring up the Math score, though? 780 in CR is great but the Math...not so much).

For safeties, many people apply to their state public schools, so you could research some of those.

Retake the SAT and score higher on writing- I work for a major tutoring company, and trust me, if you buy a guide, read it, and follow the rules for the writing section, you can score much higher (judging from your CR score). Retake in October.

Look at Tufts, it hits a solid chunk of your criteria, and it'd be a match sort of school for you.

If you're a strong enough actor, you should consider auditioning for some Communications programs- those usually have slightly less rigorous academic standards by way of including an audition.

I agree that you should definitely apply to Wes and Vassar. They are reaches at this point, but not extraordinarily so (and it will help if you get your SATs or ACTs up). Plus, your ECs are strong and they have quirky enough admissions that who knows? For example, one of my best friends here got into Wes without a single A on his transcript (mainly A-s and B+s and some grades below that). He had strong but not 2300+ SATs and only a few, but very cool and quirky, ECs. He’s completely flourished here: the adcoms must have seen something in his app that showed what a great fit he was, so if you think you really fit at Wes/Vassar, definitely give it a shot, and work hard on your essays. and I got in with a 660 math :P (though that was a few years ago, and competition has gone up since then!)

Anyway, I was also the Wes/Vassar type. Some other LACs a Wes/Vassar person might like that aren’t as hard to get into (ranging from high matches to safeties) are:

In New England:
Bates
Skidmore (definitely have very strong theater)
Sarah Lawrence (strong psyc)
Barnard (if you’re a girl)
Bard
Hampshire
Connecticut College
Wheaton (MA--not IL!)

If you decide you’re willing to look outside New England:

Oberlin (OH)
Goucher (MD)
Kenyon (OH)
Grinnell (only a bit safer than Wes/Vassar, mainly because of location) (IA)
Macalestar (MN)
Dickinson (PA)

Note that you will have to look into the drama/psyc at each of these schools, because I’m not sure how strong they are all (the ones I mentioned specifically I know about because of friends in the programs).

Also check out U or Rochester: very small for a U, and I’ve heard really good things. Also check out Bowdoin, which is still a reach, but since they are SAT optional might put even more emphasis on your really cool ECs.

You could try Brown. It's not an LAC but it's a smaller Uni. Double majors are very possible there too because of the lack of core requirements/gen. ed. It's not rural and about an hour outside of Boston.

Smith College is worth a look. Smith is part of a 5-college consortium (with Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Univ Mass). You can take classes at any. Smith is also part of the Five College Theatre departments consortium that does a lot of productions. For more info Smith College: Theatre

Smith recently decided that they will no longer require SAT or ACT scores.

I laugh whenever someone recommends Sarah Lawrence as an easier admission alternative to other "name" LA schools. My D was a National Merit finalist, had a 4.92 weighted GPA (all A's but lots of art classes along with tons of APs, including AP art), a couple of SAT-II 800s, and 1460 on the old 2-part SAT. Waiting-listed at SLC. Accepted at all others which included two top-ten U's. Don't know what they were looking for but when she applied as a transfer after a year on the Dean's List at top-ten U, they welcomed her at SLC with open arms. Now she's an SLC grad, and happy to have finally made it to her first-choice school, regardless of ranking.

Proad Dad: I def. wouldn’t call Sarah Lawrence a safety, because it's admissions are clearly quirky. But it does admit many students with stats that would make it hard for them to get into the top schools...I'd say it is safer than Vassar or Wes, though not a safety, if that makes sense. Obviously, things like what happened with your daughter happen with SLC and others, but that doesn't mean it's on average as competitive as Wes or Vassar (just as Wes or Vassar aren’t as competitive as Harvard, despite the fact that they’ve surely rejected people who’ve gotten into Harvard, and wouldn’t be good safeties for a Harvard applicant).

Of course, since SLC doesn't even consider standardized testing in its admissions decisions. But they are even more demanding in other areas and fit for them is much more defined. Probably one of the more self-selecting applicant pools there is. My point is that it's far from a safety and should really be considered for what makes it unique rather than simply as an "easier" alternative to conventional LACs. Pushing it as a safety solely on normal metrics is unfair to anyone who isn't looking for the special environment at SLC that few schools can duplicate.

LACs that had at least 6 theater grads last year

school, number theater grads, SAT CR 25th, SAT CR 75th

-goucher...it's not in your geographic pref, but it IS in baltimore, which is urban. their theater program is great.
-vassar, this is a reach school
-cooper union
-emerson
-wellesley...it's near boston!
-hampshire...GREAT arts!
-bard...maybe a low reach
-hamilton...again, a low reach
-ithaca
-sarah lawrence
-syracuse
-connecticutt coll

i'm not sure about the psych/theater programs of some of these. that's where your research comes in! ;-)

Ummm.....lets take a look at NYU and Fordham in NYC. Fordham's Lincoln Center campus is especially suitable for theatre majors and has some FAMOUS alumni, plus amazing contacts on Broadway and in television. With your stats you would likely be offered a lovely scholarship to boot.

If theatre is your passion and your intended career path, then look closely at those schools. I also second the Skidmore recommendation.

Nothing wrong with Vassar or BC or any of the top LAC's in the northeast. But for true NYC theatre experience I think NYU and Fordham are the best choice. Fordham's theatre program is by audition and it is extremely competitive. Good luck.
