Am I being delusional?

Basically, Brown is perfect for me. I would like to go for Theatre (and probably double major in something like Psychology or Media studies). However, I’m not sure if I should even apply at all. Do I even stand a chance?

ACADEMIC STUFF:
–G.P.A: 4.4 weighted, 3.8 unweighted
–Top 10% of class
–2 Dual Enrollment classes
–only 4 or 5 AP’s by the time I graduate :frowning:
–Majority of core classes have been GT or Honors, but only took one AP course before senior year!
–5 on the World History II AP

–SAT’s: so far…
–Reading 760
–Math 630 (ew.)
–Writing 740
(I’m retaking in November to get my Math up. obviously that’s too late for Early Decision, though.)
–Subject Tests: awaiting scores on
–Literature
–French
–Math I

EXTRACURRICULAR STUFF:
–Chorus every year since 6th grade.
–ACDA All-County, All-District, All-State Choirs (9-12)
–ACDA National Honor Choir in Miami, FL (9)
–VMEA Honors Choir (12)
–A Capella group (11, 12)
–Piano and Voice lessons (9-11)
–Community theatre plays (9, 10)
–Very active in school theatre (9-12) lead roles; backstage; directing a One-Act
–Staff Reporter on school paper (10-12)
–Photography Director of school paper (11,12)
–French Club member (10, 11)
–President of French Club (12)
–staff member on school literary magazine (11, 12)
–Volunteer Fauquier (recycling 1x week) (9-12)
–National Honor Society (11, 12)
–International Thespian Society (10-12)

and somehow I fit in having a life! :D

VOLUNTEER/WORK:
–Effee’s Ice Cream, server/cashier (summer through winter of 10)
–Chick-fil-A (fall through march of 11)
–Starbucks (summer before through september of 12)
–Volunteered at Fauquier Book Cellar, Marshall Library, Parks and Rec

Random “Special” Distinctions…I guess:
–went to Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan as a Musical Theatre major, summer of 2008
–photography published in literary mag (it was the featured cover art)
–Journalism story won national recognition (National Edition - ASNE)

OK, I know that was a lot, but I really want someone to straight up tell me if I should even bother applying, or whether to apply ED or not…I’m just so unsure! Gah! Thanks!

you’re not delusional, just mediocre at math, like everybody else at Brown.

^Does Brown seriously not give as much weight to the math SAT score? I mean, doesn’t Brown turn down a lot of people every year who have perfect 2400s? (Yes, I know extracurriculars, course load, essays, etc matter, but I would find it somewhat strange if they accepted a lot of people with 600-range math scores even if the other two were very high. Of course, I’d love if they did, seeing as mine SAT was 800 Writing, 740 Reading, and 600 Math. I am retaking to improve both CR and obviously Math, but I’m not sure how high I can possibly get on math and I’m certain I won’t get anywhere close to a perfect score even after studying.)

Everyone at Brown is NOT mediocre at math. 63% of the students in the class of 2013 had SATs above 700, and 84% above 650.

Go for it! You have lots of strengths. Just b/c you’re weak in one area should not discourage you from applying to the school of your dreams. Brown obviously is your top choice. In the end, only the adcoms will decide. But you’ll never be accepted if you don’t apply.

Brown has a world-renowned Math Dept, in fact has a separate School of Applied Math, so to generalize about poor math skills at Brown seems perjorative. But I’m pretty sure that Brown is not prescriptive in their admissions – you can make the cut there with one “blemish” on the app, whereas some other schools say SAT score must = X to make it to the “Deserves Consideration” pile in Admissions. I am testament to the fact that Brown takes a holistic approach to admissions compared to their peers.

Besides, look on the bright side: with Brown’s open curriculum, you’ll never have to see another math equation if you make it in the door there.

“Everyone at Brown is NOT mediocre at math. 63% of the students in the class of 2013 had SATs above 700, and 84% above 650.”

Maybe everyone at Brown is mediocre at English…I suspect you meant to say “Not everyone at Brown is mediocre at math.” Still, there is a reason that Brown attracts so many spoiled offspring of the rich and famous, and it’s not because of rigorous academics. Say hi to Scout for me.
